Curious if anyones still shooting Moly bullets?

I went through the moly craze in the late 1990’s. I was shooting Berger Bullets, they coated them for an extra dollar per 100.

When I switched to Fowler Bullets, I asked Jeff about coating them, he told me if he caught me coating them, he would not sell me any more.

I never coated a bullet since.

But I am a believer in using what works for you. Results are really the only thing that counts In shooting competitions. If you are getting the desired results from what ever combination you are shooting, who am I to tell you that you are doing it wrong.

The target is the final arbitrator.

Yes. Shooting AR Comp, R16, and R23 or by adding Tubb Dust I have gone easily 200 rounds with no change in accuracy. Combine the decoppering agent powders with a good bullet coating and the accuracy does not fall off.

Ps: I think the WAX FROM THE OLD NECO PROCESS WAS THE PROBLEM. Wax? Really? There was gumming in the bore and they blamed the moly? Hmmm

My bullets are slick as glass. And there is no "build up" in my bores. What would "build up"???? Moly???? Its what a micron thick? No... I have been shooting moly for 25 years. I have a bore scope. Carbon building up yes. Moly no.

I didn't want to open a can of worms because I haven't been trying this long enough for any discernible results but I started trying moly bullettes in WWII barrels.
First these barrels are a bitch to clean, especially the broach cut Mauser. The rifles all shot fine with the moly bullettes. However they shot fine before, let's see what a few hundred rounds down the tube does.

Moly does not degrade accuracy over time. I don't care what anyone says. I know there have been lots of internet folks who has blamed their bad barrels and probably poor cleaning practices on barrels, but it is all hogwash.

Tubb won most of his brass shooting moly (I know sling shooters are HEATHENS right?). I am pretty sure the smallest benchrest 200 yard group in history was shot by Walt Berger shooting moly.

I switched a few years ago to the water system and when done the bullets don't rub off moly. Once I rinse the bullets off good to go. I agree about barrel life! I sold a Cooper 6.5X284 that had 2300 documented rounds. Disclosed to buyer with providing if unhappy about accuracy I'd buy back. His smith ran a scope down the bore and called me questioning the amount of firings. He said after looking at the bore he's guess 500-800 rounds. Yup I'm convinced that moly does extend barrel life.

Why do you think moly coating is no longer popular? If it works why no more interest?
It doesn't sell barrelzs.

It was popular years ago...and I still shoot them in 17 Rem,...still helps keep ya shooting the small bores without cleaning for a longer period of time...IMO
Still have some 40 gr BT molyed to shoot in the .222 at 3750 fps...and probably 400 pcs of 155 Senars molyed for 308...but several thousand molyed 17s.
And all 500 of the 115 Tubb 6mm are TBN coated, different than moly....but coated... Run them 3020 fps in the Dasher. Are the bullet coatings beneficial...I don't know, ...you'd need a lab and extensive testing to know the final result...seem to get a little more velocity but ya add a few kernels of powder over standard non coated bullets.
But if you believe it will help...then it will help.

Agree 100%. Still happily shooting moly to this very day! It just flat works and has several worthwhile benefits.

I shoot moly... However the direction and benefits focus appears to have changed. Recently there has been a shift in finding better results with lubing necks. You can find numerous threads on here about Lubed necks and what do you use and what are your results. search NeoLube #2

Here is a video from Bryan Zolnikov where he tests and shares his results. He didn't moly his bullets but the same principal applies (thanks Bryan Z)

Do I Lube Inside Neck Only or Inside the Neck and On the Bullet?

With the 3-5k I go thru shooting service rifle I decided long ago that it was easier, cheaper and better in the long run to just rebarrel every spring.

I shoot 6 Dasher, 6GT, 6X47L, 6 creedmoor, and 243Wssm. All get Wet mollied bullets.
Now building a .308 FTR rifle. It will get wet molly bullets.

How do you apply it?

How do you apply it?

Current process wet method (depending on weight of bullet .30 cal between 110 - 130 bullets per session)
- Wash bullets with Dawn dish soap
- Rinse in hot water to remove all soap residue
- Heat in oven 250 degrees until dry (approx 4 min) (optional)
- Using two tall bottles (reloder 16 size) put half (approx 55 bullets) in each bottle add enough water to cover 85% of the bullets. I have better results with less water than more.
- I reuse the moly / water solution from the previous session
- amt of moly i don't have an exact measurement
- place both bottles in tumbler
- tumble in vibratory tumbler for 60min (the tall bottles ensure they do not fall into the tumbler and i get vibration, rotation and impact contact of the bottles)
- drain off water
- place in cardboard box any amazon boxes works, add news paper and one paper towel to the box.
- add bullets and shake the bullets to remove any water.

I haven't heard others discuss this but i stand the bullets nose down, when i touch the bullets to paper towel there is always droplets of water in the meplat. To stand the bullets nose down i use the blue blocks out of the top of Lapua boxes. two for each 50 bullets. Let them sit i usually leave them a few hours.

Trimming bullets: I trim than moly the impact process cleans up the point and knocks of any jagged cuts
Pointing bullets: Moly than point same reasoning.

Dry method same steps but 4 hrs in the tumbler 1,500 bullets take 40 hours. The wet method is 10 hours a quarter of the time and i can do multiple batches in a day.

Cheers
Trevor

I moly coat my bullets for pdogging since I run 5to9k out of my rig (223) yearly on them.
Yes it makes a difference in barrel life.

I moly plate virtually everything I shoot, and have been since Neco developed their process and kit back in the 90's. I have never seen a downside.

I think the bad rap moly got back in the day was from people trying to shortcut the plating process, such as "Ms Moly", which was a moly coating and not impact plated.
