I would, I would want the bedding material to be about .050" thick.I have a Remington 700 in a laminated stock with an aluminum bedding insert. I want to bed the recoil lug. My question is do I remove material from the aluminum block where the back of the recoil lug contacts the aluminum?
Tape the front and sides as well (I've never taped the bottom, but don't see how it could be detrimental).Tape the bottom of the lug only with black ecectrical tape.

Adding some clearance there helps in giving a little "wiggle" to aid in removal. The only place that matters for zero clearance is the back of the lug.
The bottom is the most important part to not touchYou absolutely do need to tape the bottom of the lug! More so than any other surface in my personal opinion.
