Case neck okay?

FL sizing ADG 6.5CM brass with a non-bushing Whidden Die. I pulled the expander ball out of the die because I’m using a mandrel die after FL sizing. First picture is after FL sizing and before running mandrel. Second picture after mandrel and trimming.

Looks like its squeezing that neck down pretty good, measurements before and after mandrel on the top portion of the neck?

seems good to me…you are doing the same thing I would do.

are you bumping the shoulders back yet or do you have it backed off for now?

That isn’t Full Length sized, the case may have been poked into the die somewhat that is all.Have another try and this time size the case until the entire neck is sized. If you can’t work it out and no one locally can help you, send the die and some fired cases back to the manufacturer.

he said he bumped the shoulder with it

If you are bumping the shoulder .002 and only sizing 1/2 the neck, the dimensions on the die aren't correct. box it up along with a few fired cases and a few that look like your first pic. Whidden will take care of it for you.
I hope this helps,

Lloyd

I know that some dies, more specifically bushing dies, sometimes only size a portion of the neck. You don’t think this could be what is happening rather than a defective die?

Whether by design or not, at what point do you say it is defective? Speaking for me only, I want to have the neck sized at least 75%-85% of it's total length. If you are running a cartridge with an already short neck, it becomes even more important.
As always, YMMV,

Lloyd

If it is a FL sizing die , non bushing, then something is wrong. Are you saying this case was not run in completely, only enough to size approx 1/2 the neck? Looks like a too small of a bushing was used with the inside bevel up instead of down causing that ridge of brass buildup. In any case it looks like crap, but will probably function. What does a fired, not sized case look like?

It looks like it was put into a 260 Rem die. That it only sized that amount of the neck. Something isn’t right. Many years ago I bought a set of Lee 7x57 dies. When I went to set up dies, I found the sizing die in the box was labeled 222. I only lived an hour from Lee, so drove over and showed them what I had received.

Ugh! This is so frustrating. Sometimes I hate reloading. Let me answer some questions which will hopefully clear things up. This is all 1x fired ADG brass fired from the same Tikka rifle. This is a 6.5CM die. I am using the Whidden headspace gauge and all processed brass run perfectly through the gun (no rounds loaded). Now for some numbers.
Case neck at base and top before sizing .294”
Case neck at top after FL sizing 0.282”
Case neck at base after FL sizing 0.292”
Case neck at top after mandrel 0.288”
Case neck at base after mandrel 0.292”
It’s clearly sizing the entire case neck correct? Interesting, when I look inside the die there is a rim about half way up the neck portion of the die which indicates to me it’s doing what it’s designed to do. I don’t know why it’s designed that way.

Between your numbers above and the pics, I don't think your case is all the way in the die. I'd send the die back with a few cases.

Measure a resized case neck just above the neck shoulder junction.

First picture, that case neck looks bad.
