Illinois single shot deer caliber ??

My nephew is in the Navy and wants me to figure out what’s available that’s legal to hunt In Illinois next year. He wants a Number 1 but all I see that’ll work is 44 Magnum and 450 Marlin.
Idk what 30 cal bottleneck case is 1.400 inches long so figure it’s gotta be one of the straight walled cases like a 38-55 or 375 Win would be best but I’ve never used any of these to hunt withB9129C7B-1CDD-41F2-8F8E-E544265764B1.png

Odd. Even 7.62X39 is 1.52 inches.

ETA. The 300 whisper is just under 1.4 inches and just over 500 ft pounds at the muzzle. Looks like Illinois had some help in writing those regs.

So as long as you had a Bob Sled type single shot magazine you could hunt with an AR15 300 Whisper.

I was trying to figure out how to convert a lever action 38-55 into a single shot.

Too bad the 30 Herrett is 1.6 inches.

What stupid arcane laws. Like NY 30 years ago. "Slug gun only!!!! Or pistols, but they have to be 35 caliber or larger!" (So you don't hunt with an anemic 25 auto I guess?)

Hence the creation and run on 35 Remington Contenders and XP100's.

And the justification back then? "Them fast rifles shooot too far!" (I recall hearing shotgun slugs hit, bounce and click/whine thru the woods as a regular occurance).

After 30 years NY finally opened a lot of the state to rifle hunting. Guess them rifles don't shooot too far now?

Politicians. Idiots.

You could take the end cap off the magazine and slide a wooden dowel rod down the inside of the magazine spring same way you plug a shotgun, put the cap back on and there's no way to put a shell in the magazine. Don't know why they wouldn't accept that... John

and …. With an assault weapons ban looming in Illinois … the cartridge length limit for bottle neck cartridges be just under the 7.62x39 allows them to say it has no sporting use. ‍ In that AWB legislation there is an exemption for rifles approved for sporting use by DNR.

Mr. Big -

Howdy !

IF they make .39-40 " factory " ammo ( lead ), it would meet the criteria.
.44-40 would too.

.444 & .45-70 are too long, based on what the reg says.

Can you still hunt varmint and predators with an AR?

I left that corrupt commie craphole 9 years ago, so I have no idea.

The thing that stuck out to me was "both must be available as a factory load with published ballistic tables".

Takes being an inventive wildcatter right out of the equation!!

As For cartridge, 450 Bushmaster comes to mind.

I live in Illinois and just purchased a single shot CVA Scout in 44 magnum for next years deer season. Nice compact size and very sweet 2 1/2 pound trigger. I have used an Ithaca Deerslayer for close to 30 years with very good success however couldn’t resist purchasing another deer getter!

I think I would rather have a 44 Rem Magnum than a 300 whisper or 350 legend on those northern deer.

He wants a Number 1 so maybe that’ll work.

What is it about politicians? Apparently a good many of them, upon viewing the citizens of their city/state/nation, see nothing but potential criminals.

I'm tired of this Kindergarten approach to governance. If little Johnny in the back of the room acts up, take him out in the hallway and kick his ass. Don't make everyone else put their heads on their desk.
