F Class TR: Memento Mori!

F class TR. Found a range 1.5hrs that does the 600 FTR at least. That is good enough excuse for me. I drive the same time distance to the ELR range.

I sent Savage a request for a model 12 Benchrest dropped into a Savage Palma adjustable stock. Unless it will drop into an MDT ACC chassis? Or just get the 12 Benchrest and mount some cheek riser. I like the dual port design of the benchrest model.

On hand I have in 308 WIN:

7000 LR primers
2000 Fed FGMM brass
500 Lapua cases
8lbs of Varget, 8lbs of AA2520
1500ct 155gr Amax
MDT ACC chassis
Atlas Super Cal bipod with ski feet
Armageddon gear rear bag
Sordin Pro electronic muffs

To get:
Sightron SIII FCH reticle to start out.
Rifle
Spottiing scope or 15X56 binos?

Anything else?

I think that should be enough to see if I'm gonna like it...

Run what you have to start out. The important thing is to participate, and most of all to have fun. That is what keeps you coming back. There are a few small items, little odds and ends that are hard to even think of while sitting here typing, i.e. eye protection, cleaning rod, small tool kit, etc. You may well already have these items in your range box for use on a typical range trip. Nonetheless, everyone has their own preferences and you hit all the major components on your list. Two such items that do come to mind are a timer and a clipboard of some sort for scoring purposes. Both are very useful.

I have a Burris XTR III 5-30X56 that has a thinner reticle. Some even complain its too thin for a FFP scope, but I was thinking of using that until I knew for sure what I wanted in an FTR scope.

Get in and go ... keep expectations low and you will exceed every time! The people are generally very helpful and knowledgeable ... some of the best people (and long time friends) I know were met at competitions.
Although Binos can work a good spotting scope will be helpful (assuming your not on E-targets)... just don't let gear hold you back from making your initial plunge in to a match.

I was about where you are when I started Close to 2 years ago. I got a cheaper Savage 10 with a 26” barrel and started going to local matches to see if I was going to like it. I was hooked pretty quickly. It didn’t take long and I upgraded to a Savage 12 FTR similar to the benchrest stock and then to a custom build. Any of the rifle combinations you mentioned will be fine. That Palma is a really nice stock. I keep my 12 FTR as a backup gun and shoot it from time to time.

One thing you will need is a front mat. You can glue some carpet to a piece of plywood or cut out a piece of stall mat (from a farm supply store) and glue some carpet on it. Check the NRA Highpower rules for the legal dimensions for the mat.

That will be fine to use while getting a feel for shooting in F-Class. I rarely run magnification above 32X or so because of a tendency to crossfire when I can't readily see the target number board (i.e. if I run the mag too high and minimize the field of view). As long as the reticle doesn't completely occlude the 0.5 MOA diameter X-ring at the chosen magnification, and I can't imagine that it would, it will work.

It would also be a good idea to chat with the other competitors and see what equipment they are running. I wouldn't suggest trying to do that when someone is about to shoot or busy with scoring duties, but there should be plenty of time to talk during the course of the match. If someone has a brand/type of scope you might be interested in down the road, you might also ask to take a look through it. Looking through a scope is the best way to decide what your eyes tell you about it. Most F-Class shooters are happy to to talk with new shooters and help them out, as long as it doesn't interfere with their shooting/match duties.
