Traveling to Canada for a match?

dc.fireman

Sling & Irons!
There is a strong possibility that I will travel to Winnipeg, Manitoba from the US for the 2023 World Police & Fire Games. I was wondering if anyone from the US had traveled across the border with a bolt gun, and if there are any issues of which to be aware?

In general you will need 3 things to get there and back.

An invitation from the club/organization conducting the match
An RCMP 5589 form, last time I went it was an RCMP 909 but I think the # changed.
A CBP 4457 form to get your rifle back into the US. (Get it stamped before you leave)

Pay $25 Canadian at the border going in for a 3 mo temporary permit. It’s easier than some days at the airline counter in thenUS

DO NOT CARRY A HANDGUN

Some American competitors, those who travel to Canada often, take a course and get a Canadian Possession and Acquisition License (PAL). This allows them to cross into Canada with rifles or shotguns with no impediment. It even allows the holder to purchase ammunition or firearms in Canada. Alternatively, one registers the rifle and pays a fee at the border and receives temporary permission. There may well be changes of which I'm unaware, so check with Canada's Border Protection Agency to be certain.
How things have changed! Like any of the more mature shooters, I can remember when the border was barely a concern when it came to rifles. My first crossing with a rifle was when I was fifteen years old and I was travelling on a Greyhound bus, from Calgary to Spokane. In the baggage compartment, rode my rifle, reloading gear, and components (Primers, bullets and HiVel 2 powder). WH

There is now a $25 charge to bring each firearm into Canada.

If I go to the US (with firearms) and return with them, I too must pay $25.00 each to bring them home. I now use my friends guns.

What rifle will you be using? Reason I ask, and it may not be an issue, but most semi-auto rifles are now prohibited in Canada, would hate to see you try and cross the border with one unknowingly.

In the words of our prime minister, “These weapons were designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time. There is no use and no place for such weapons in Canada,”.

That was May 2020, now a couple weeks ago the handgun "freeze" was implemented. Left wing agenda is coming together quickly here. Sigh.

Its been a few years since I did it. Alberta. My first ever crossing on the way to Tok.
The session was more of an interrogation than an interview. Unless your ducks are all lined up, I would expect a bit of a delay. But in retrospect, it might not have been much worse than you would expect at any TSA checkpoint in U.S. if you had forgotten to leave your nail clips, wife's manicure kit or fingernail file at home.
"Paranoid" hardly suffices!

I crossed for a match in Aug this year. Pretty much as XTR said, paperwork for your rifle coming and going and an invitation letter from the match.

One wrinkle, and these things seem to change fast, was that when I crossed I needed to have registered and filled out the ArriveCAN application which has to do with COVID-19 vaccination stuff. Otherwise a quarantine period was necessary.

No arrive can app anymore. And they have scrapped the proof of vaccine requirements.
And as stated no hand guns. Letter of invite and should all be good to get into Canada.

A new law came out this week, semi auto rifle fed from a box magazine are going to be prohibited. This after the promise that he won't go after the hunting rifles.

As well as semi-auto shotguns with removable magazine. Disgusting what is happening here. Canada will be ruined by apathy.

I'm bringing a single shot bolt action center-fire, and a single shot bolt action rimfire rifle. I was more concerned that they would question the amount of ammunition (300, 200 rds.) I was bringing in - it seems like a lot, but we are supposed to be firing 2 matches plus a practice day for centerfire, and the same for rimfire.

Thanks for all the replies & information.
