Tips for traveling to a match by air

Negative, ghostrider ;)

Firearms cases are to be locked with a regular hard lock, that only you have a key to.

What Kind of Gun Case and lock do I need for air travel?
According to regulations , your gun case can be integrated with a lock or you can use a case with a separate lock. Do not use TSA approved locks for your gun case.

and from https://www.tsa.gov/travel/transporting-firearms-and-ammunition

Only the passenger should retain the key or combination to the lock unless TSA personnel request the key to open the firearm container to ensure compliance with TSA regulations. You may use any brand or type of lock to secure your firearm case, including TSA-recognized locks.

I thought we were still talking about gear cases

Well... Not really ;) You replied to my post; if you read up a post above that you should see that I was responding to Jim's post about stuffing everything but the kitchen sink in his rifle case. It does work, and I have seen plenty of people do just that... but I have also seen some unhappy outcomes as well.

I've never had an issue using typical store-bought Master locks on my gun cases. Not all have been "TSA Approved". My overall take is that most of the people in front of the counter are afraid of guns. They really want as little to do with them as possible. In contrast, the folks in back that swipe down the case testing for explosives/accelerants are not afraid of them or simply don't really care what's inside. I always wait around the ticket/baggage counter for 5-10 minutes until they tell me the case has been cleared. I've never been asked to open one back up as yet (finger crossed).
