Ever feel disconnected with other shooters ?

I've been doing this for so long, that I should be some kind of expert gun snob.

However, due to my low IQ, short memory and abysmal attention span, I can easily descend to the lowest levels of red-neck bubbafied, shooting fun.

I'm kind of disconnected from guys who are obviously more skilled and proficient than I am, but only if they go out of their way to prove it. jd

Disconnected like you don't know.........I'm a CMP and NRA sling shooter, the club closest to me, is very , well, hillbilly...... sitting at a bench , blasting a paper plate at 50 yards, is marksmanship.....being told no one shoots standing up (offhand), I need a scope on my rifle, no one uses them old look thru things, in reference to match rifle, that's a pretty stupid gun, I need a nice little PSA 16 inch job. BTW, no one shoots prone or setting, no uses a "strap" (we call them a sling), no one shoots in competition at targets, just ask Mr I'm to tactical for you.
In reference to my Anschutz, I need a guud ry-file like a 10-22......
The people at church think I'm anti social cause I don't chat with anyone, no, not at all, I don't care about football or lawncare......
Sometimes someone asks me about when I raced cars, yes I raced alcohol funny cars, and the blank looks are abound , I'm told I'm a liar when I say I miss the 3500hp engines...nope no engine can make that....or you didn't drive dirt track with a nova?
When I'm not chasing the X ring, I build running model engines in my shop, try explaining a running steam engine that fits on a ½ dollar......I need a table saw and build wood nick-nacks.....
Try explaining what & why a few thousands are (.001 /.002)& hoe critical that dimension is, but a tape measure is close enough, right?
I build race car suspension and parts..........I do enjoy going to most of bigger short tracks & road courses around the country
...try talking about that with the people around here, the leftist school board president, or the electrical engineer across the street from me.....
Try sharing an article from machinist workshop magazine, where I got published, (I wrote the article, took the pictures, did the design work, machined the project)......my wife just expects me to do "non traditional things" she is not impressed, the others around me......football is all they speak of.
With the holidays approaching, and family gathering coming, I have a pile of machinist workshop magazine and home shop machinist, I will read, while others scream at the football game on the TV

Thanks for letting me vent!!!

55fairlane, to be fair, you've gotta admit that of your activities listed above - both shooting and other - 95% of living humans are basically clueless about.

I don't mean that in a derogatory way, quite the opposite; they are very specialized and unique, and you already know this. Heck, you're simply not gonna have much luck finding someone to shoot the breeze with if you want to have a real conversation. The most you can hope for is to find someone who knows a little something about some phase of your hobbies that they will be impressed and interested to some degree.

Thank goodness that your interests are numerous enough that you might occasionally find, or already know some individuals who you can enjoy interesting and productive contact with. (if you really want that) ;) jd

Just for reference.Knick-Knacks are spelled with the "K" in Delaware. I had to learn that when I moved here ten years ago. I'm from PA and am surrounded with people from MD,NJ,NY,and Ct. Yes I am disconnected. And like it like that.

I go disconnected about 30 years ago. I had been told a lot prior to that, that was absolutely false. A lot of it hearsay from various magazines, authors and articles.
Young fellow with a young family hardly ever two nickels to rub together. Got to a point I had zero extra money for jacketed bullets. Fellow loaned me some old ancient casting stuff. All down hill from there. I didn’t shoot a jacketed upper for close to 20 years, won my share of “wood” and made some folks have a cup of STFU about how worthless cast bullets are.
About that same time I sold all of my rifles as I had no use for them. A TC or an XP100 out did all of the crowd I hunted with.
Fast forward a few more years. 17’s blow around in the wind like a feather…….that’s fine don’t play with one. Leaves more supply for the rest of us that know better.
