Service rifle equipment

to quote Roy D Mercer, "How big a boy are ya?" I have a used Creedmoor size 42 non tapered hardback with all position upgrade that I am not using currently. I am about 5'10 - 190ish.
Same dimensions plus about 5 lbs. What are you planning to do with it?

I was bitten by the position shooting bug some time ago... some of the things stated I completely agree with: 'buy once, cry once', and do NOT skimp on a coat. Don't forget to budget for practice and match ammo. And a decent spotting scope. Keep a DOPE book - it helps when you're first starting out.

My personal faves are:

Springfield Armory Nat'l Match M1A, with the standard front sight post (not the Nat'l Match sight post);
Rock River Arms Nat'l Match A4 + Leupold VX-R Patrol 1-4 scope
Kowa 82SV Spotting scope w/ IER 27x eyepiece
Creedmoor Sports Polecat head and tripod stand
Turner biothane sling
10.9 mat

I shoot under international rules occasionally; Creedmoor strap type coats fall outside of those rules; I use a Kurt Thune international type coat instead.

Get in touch with a mentor from a local match, and be coachable! Best of luck, and enjoy!

Go with a Wylde chamber. The new CLE chamber is not the same as it used to be and you can't seat long for heavy bullets.
How has the CLE chamber changed? I haven't seen any new reamer prints to reflect an even shorter freebore.
I think the CLE is a better option than the Wylde. Have no issue seating 80s/82s. Most complaints come from poor brass prep. The CLE is a tighter chamber. The Wylde is designed to be the hooker down on the corner that can take anything.

Get a leather sling, I like Hollis, and set it up as a no pulse. Much easier to get in and out of and it is repeatable.

Consider a Monard coat. Creedmoor has jacked up their prices and the fit just isn't there. I went through 3 Creedmoor coats and was never happy with them. Considered ordering their deluxe and realized I was at Monard cost at that point, but a Monard is actually made to fit YOU. No need for sweatshirts, makes for cooler and more comfortable shooting.

That said, it's easier to find a used Creedmoor at a decent price to get going. I still have one, I'd let go.

Try different slings before you buy them. Web versus leather is a Wranger versus FJ type of argument. I went back to a web sling after a while and felt like my position was better. The only other thing I would suggest is practice setting up your firing point at home until you get it perfect, then time yourself doing it.

My old barrels with CLE chamber would allow an 80gr to be seated at approx. 2.475" OAL when new. The new barrels are not throated that long and are basically a mag. length only chamber. The chamber is tighter than the Wylde around the base of the case. If I had known the that before ordering my last 2 barrels, I would have ordered the Wylde version.

Sizing for the creedmoor costs has been spotty the last few years because they changed the cut of the coat. If you get into Alabama, their store is in anniston. I don't think I will buy another one of their coats without trying it on first, a monard is only a bit more. Be very clear with your measurements if you order.
If you don't want to spend the money on the hollis sling,(I have one of his gunbelts and it is unsatisfactory) the turner biothane sling is actually pretty good and almost half the price.
The leupold scopes with the p5 dials should be avoided, they're untrustworthy. I like the reticle of the vortex but have only shot a few shots with one. I have known a few people whose athlons were not reliable either.
The cheaper geissele 2 stage triggers or rock river will work for a start but I like the geissele national match and it's durable as can be.
You don't need to spend a lot on components either, half a match is at 200 yards and it's a big target. If you can find m193 for cheap, shoot it at 200 and save the brass.
To clarify, we didn’t change out coats, we added a new style of coat. The hardback is the same as it was many years ago. The deluxe hardback is more of custom fit with some added features. Just this past spring we went through a re-modeling with an apparel designer to make sure our coat grading was as accurate as we can get. So regardless of whether you want the standard hardback that has won almost as many matches as Russ Theurer or the newest coat in the deluxe pattern, we have you covered.

If you need help with the coat, call the office and ask for me, I’ll be happy to help.

I’m looking for some guidance. I have gotten Into shooting ar type service rifles. So far it’s been just what I have been looking for. I love the whole atmosphere surrounding it. Every time I shoot is a learning experience. I have been using an M1 sling and a swfa optic. I would like to purchase a leather sling, shooting coat and dedicated optic. I just don’t really know what items to get. I would like to get the most for my money. Just looking for some advice on items that are well suited for the sport. Anything suited to improving shooting is what I’m looking for. Not looking to buy ability just want things that will aid in shooting. Thanks in advance.
Welcome to a sport that will bring you great joy and occasional heartache. Take below for what it’s worth from a washed up service rifle shooter. The most points are paid for via hours of practice, dry firing, and preparing for matches. However if you’re looking to upgrade things the following is where I recommend spending the money, in order of priority.

1. Barrel - An accurate rifle is second to nothing, period. The AR’s accuracy (assuming you have a float tube) is in the barrel.

2. Coat - Assuming the gun holds the 10 ring, the next trick is making sure you do. A good coat (full disclosure I am a died in the wool Creedmoor supporter) will make a huge difference.

3. Trigger - Just buy a good trigger. Geissele, Trigger Tech, KM…Going cheap here will only cause you problems.

4. Components - Buy Bullets, powder, primers or ammo. You need to practice, a lot.

5. spotting Scope/Stand - Fighting a cheap scope and less than ideal stand will cost you points. 50% of the course of fire is at a distance where wind is a factor (outside the 10 ring). Being able to see that and adjust is worth points.

From here, the rest can come with time. But if you have 1-5 nailed down, you’ll progress if you put in the effort.

Sounds like it wasn't chambered deep enough, I highly doubt CLE changed its reamer to have a shorter freebore.

Do y’all have a store front? Y’all’s address is just a couple hours away from me.

No sir, we don’t have a tradition Retail store. That said if you’re in the area and would like to get measured by one of our staff for a coat we can do that. Depending on what size you are, I may have a standard hardback in inventory you can try on for fit. Best thing to do is schedule an appointment and we’ll be glad to have someone walk you through the coat, or any other gear for that matter. PM me sometime and I’ll send you my email address and we can get something coordinated. A great option is to time the trip to allow for some range time at the CMP range in Talladega. It’s right off I-20 about 25 minutes from us.

Are you suggesting Creedmoor will stand by the poor sizing recommendations being made a couple years ago?

Not sure what you’re asking exactly, but we do stand behind our products. I’ll shoot you a PM with my email address. I’ll be glad to see what the issue is and help to whatever extent I can.

I am referring to the creedmoor deluxe coats that were oversized in the shoulders due to sizing recommendations by creedmoor staff. The one I tried was purchased in 2020 by a shooter, smaller than me through the chest. He ordered a coat based on the sizing he was told to use when he called creedmoor with his measurements. This person even asked them to clarify that he indeed needed a size 44 coat for his 40 inch chest and was told 44 was correct.
The coat is extremely loose in the shoulders, which is not ok for prone and sitting. I tried it out over a couple weeks at home on the SCATT. For a while the creedmoor website was even telling customers their sizing number would be larger than their actual chest size. For someone who doesn't know better it could be a problem.
My 8yr old creedmoor fits much better based off only the chest measurement. I am not the only one person on this thread to have experienced this problem. Hence the reason I suggest OP tries on a coat before he buys one.

OP, you want a coat that you can snug up tight in the back-shoulders to provide a stable position. If the older coat that someone else said was for sale is your size, you'll probably be fine.
