Sako L461 extractor

Anyone know where I might buy one or get mine replaced??? Best way to describe it is its kinda long and skinney. LOL, not a very professional description.

Could be wrong but the Sako Gun Parts extractor appears to be for the A1 action and not the L461.

Mine looks different than the one in the picture. I tried to post a picture of mine but it says its to large to post. (Still working on that.) I sent an email to Midwest Gun Works about repairing mine and they said no parts available. I Google searched yesterday and didn't have much luck . The extractor works most of the time now, its just not reliable and aggravating when it doesn't work. Looking at the claw part of the extractor, you can tell its going to 100% fail before to much longer. This is not a collector quality gun so how its repaired is not a big concern as long as it works and looks decent. From my searching, I guess mine is considered a "long" extractor. I also have found out they are scarce as hens teeth. Could a modern style extractor be installed? I think there would be some open space under the new style due to length but would that be a problem? Its a 223 Win.

Have you tried cutting the face of it slightly positive? That fixes most of them.

I'm not exactly sure what you are calling the face. When looking at the "claw", its almost gone. With the bolt out of the action, using a cartridge, it barely holds it and its pretty easy to get it to slip off the claw. Just looks really worn out to me. This is above my skill level. I'm not really sure what holds it in the bolt. Its bad now, I don't want to make it worse.

The angles in the drawings are exaggerated. But many if not most extractors have a slightly negative angle which is exaggerated by typical wear at the tip. The angle changed to ever so slightly positive with a clean face (the part that grabs the front of the rim) usually fixes these. This is somewhat delicate work. If your not comfortable let someone do it that has experience in that area especially with a hard to get part.

The part in your drawing labeled sharp, is almost gone on mine. Before my shop closed down, I had a young guy that was a wizard with a tig machine. He probably could have built it back up and reground it to work. Those days are gone though so I'm at the mercy of the internet. I really appreciate all the advice given and my search continues.

There are some really great laser welders out there. They can do some incredible things.

I'm kinda in a pickle. Looks like an original part is out of the question. An M-16 extractor looks considerably longer than a Sako. I wonder if converting it to the M-16 is feasible? I thought about a complete new/used bolt assembly. LOL, what he wanted for a used bolt was just a little less than I got in the rifle, so that idea went to the bottom of the list.

The L461s /A1s and 491s I've seen don't have an extractor like that. Is that a really early one? Does it have bofus steel stamped on the barrel?

On the L461s and Vixens, there were long extractors and short extractors. You have the long version. If it's a 223, the one that Zastava uses in their current M85....which was formerly known as the Interarms Mini Mark X, aka: the Mini Mauser....is the same thing. With the exception of the bolt shroud, the bolts on the Zastava/Interarms are a virtual copy of the Sako L461 bolts.

It's #5 in the diagram, part number 107257. I bought a couple of these as spares from them not long ago.

The rifle has a custom barrel and it does have the long extractor. From what I have found searching the Zastava extractor is out of stock everywhere also. I tried to put it in the cart and it wouldn't let me. Seems the word got out they would interchange and now they are gone to.

I'd suggest registering and joining this Sako forum. The various actions are segmented into discussion groups and there is a pretty good Buy/Sell section, as well.

I'd also give AccuFlite a call. They are big in the Sako world and at one time had a pretty good inventory of parts. You won't find much of this on their web page...give them a call.

I sent them an email. We shall see what they say. Thanks

I received a reply from Accuflite. Same answer as the rest. Due to unavailable parts, they can't fix it either.

So, would an M-16 extractor install be feasible? I seem to be running out of options for repair. I like the rifle and hate to send it down the road for someone else to have this issue.
