barrel finish?

Looking to reproduce this barrel finish for a customer. I haven't tried it yet, but I always thought this was done with a DA or a Palm sander and a chosen grit of sandpaper, say 60 or 80. Anyone in the know?

I looked at this thing 6-7 times today thinking about it - It really looks like some kind of rotary tool was used to gouge it up.

Or you could just use a Krieger. They come pretty close to that from the factory.

(Joke. Krieger is my first choice... but man, the factory finish is that of a dull beaver operated by an apprentice.)

I've got some barrels sitting around im going to do some testing. I've seen them done like the one in Dusty's photo, but these that I have a next level nice. They have a pattern but don't if that makes sense. As mentioned before very smooth finish.

I might have to pick up a palm sander and try this, I don't think a DA sander will give the proper effect.

I'm not sure if you would need to start from a polished barrel, but I would think a smooth finish to start would be needed.

Yep,
that is a Dan Dowling

Wizzle Finish

It was developed by a gunsmith out of NY state. about half a zillion years ago.
There was a really good article about the finish in Precision Shooting, maybe a million years ago????

Dan uses a 1/4 sheet sander (grit-I have no idea) while the barrel is spinning (speed- no clue) in a lathe. NOT your good lathe....... looks like an older wood lathe that has been converted?????

Just tried it as an experiment on barrel I'm profiling right now. It's at .005 per rev with a roughing tool.
Yep you need a smoother finish than that.
