Another one in progress.

I thought I'd post some progress pics to show part of the process and the "fancy tools" needed to make one of these. It's not really that hard. You just have to "creep up" to the final shape. The heavy shaping is done with a cheap Wen rotary sander with 60 grit. The grinder with a 60 grit pad does the cut behind the grip. A palm sander with 80 on it gets you closer, then use 120, then 220. I use the plywood strip with 120 on it to find high and low spots. Just follow the aluminum template. Easy as pie!;)

Easy for a craftsman saturated with artistic ability. Hard for us engineering type that likes straight lines that can be cut using machines. I could do one freehand and it would function great but it would look like someone hacked on a 2x6 with a bunch of dull chisels:D

Great job and I envy your skill!!

Beautiful work!!!

I started my first rifle stock with a walnut blank four years ago. Using nothing but handtools to do everything but the holes for the action screws (I love old school even when it's a gigantic time sink), I got about 80% done in the first couple of months. Since then, the project's been on the back burner. Seeing this inspires me to finally finish the project.

I got another day in. Took it down to 600 to see what the grain looks like.

Git 'er done! Shooting weather is coming. Shooting a gun with a stock you made adds a little more pleasure to the hobby. :) I'm not a great shooter yet, but at least my guns look good,;)

Yes it does, Paul. Nothing like a little more pressure. I must have spent an hour looking for a "better" piece of walnut for the fore end laminate. I inletted this last fall for a Stiller action but wound up putting the Stiller in another stock. I have a factory Remington 5R 308 and a rebarreled Remington in 6br waiting for stocks. They just don't seem good enough for this stock. I may have to finally buy that Bighorn I've wanted for a while.

Full sand at 600. Recoil pad done. I won't get it finished today. Wifey wants to go shopping.:(
