22-204

I know it's been talked about before but I like bringing up old stuff.

I have a an old wore out 788 .223 that belonged to my grandad I want to do something with at some point. This round has my interest. Is it just a simple one step resize? Think it would be pretty cool on a 1-12 with 52 Bergers/55 SBK's.

I've been shooting one for 16 yrs and it is my favorite coyote hunting rifle. I'm always experimenting with cartridges and rifles for coyotes. I have my own reamer and keep a spare 223 barrel around that I can re chamber if mine goes dead. And yes it is as easy as swapping out the guts and bushing on a Type "S" FL 204 Ruger bushing die and using a Hornady sliding sleave 223 Seater.

Last coyote I killed last season. Savage action and rechambered 223 barrel with Sightron-II 1.5-6x42 scope about the perfect calling rifle.

You will be pleasantly surprised with velocity, accuracy and absolutely knocking the dog snot out of coyotes. I personally use the 53rg Vmax, but the Berger's will work great and the 55gr Sierra HPBT will as well.

Bout that callin rig though haha. That’s sick. I need a bike now. Haha

Forgive me if this is going a little off topic, but those of you who make your barrels out of a 223, can you elaborate a little? Does it require a set back(this is my understanding with making a 223 AI) or can you run the reamer in a little farther?

Haha I saw that picture when I first started looking in to it. So 23-24" should keep the speed, I assume? I can go 26 but prefer not to, being that it'll have a can on it.

No set back necessary as you clean up the whole chamber when you run a 22-204 reamer in. You set the headspace while reaming. On a true 223AI you have to set the barrel back to create a crush fit for fireforming.. There are lots of ways to increase the capacity of the 223 case without setting the barrel back but it take a little more to form brass.

The 22-204 is about the simplest near max capacity cartridge for a .378 bolt face rifle. No fireforming, no custom dies and just load and shoot. You can use 223 barrels to build a rifle.

Thanks, that's what I want to hear! BTW, do you get 50 mpg with that hog? Cool little ride for hunting.
