Is Harrel's powder measure the best way to go?

..... or is there something better these days??
define your use ???
short range br at the range, Niel jones, bruno, or chargemaster lite.
n133 in anything else can easily be as bad as plus or minus .3....with the large window on n133 it works until you hit the top or bottom of a node.
so my answer is no, yes there are other options chargemaster lite is the cheapest that works with n133

Harrell's has a great reputation.
How deep are your pockets?
Do you load by volume?

I personally drop a charge in a pan then put pan on scale and trickle up by the kernal.
The drop need not be exact.
Lee does fine.

Can’t speak for short range but the long range guys load to the single kernel and my Harrel’s won’t do that consistently, I must trickle up.

Harrells is the smallest and best powder drop. Neil Jones much bigger size and more expensive but more accuratye. For long range you'll have to trickle up to get accurate charges.

I have a Harrels and have used it for many years and will continue to use it. It is good for +/- .1 grain with N135, H380, 3031, IMR4198 and RL15. I set it to drop .2 grains under and trickle up to the desired charge for competition rounds. For ground hog and varmint hunting I just throw the charge straight to the case.

Consistent operating technique is essential with any manual thrower.

Thanks for the response. I'm diving into the hort range benchrest game and planning on starting with N133. I weigh out powder for my long range loads.

This debate will never end. For example, two of the best short range shooters that I know, one uses a powder thrower, and one preloads all of his powder loads and uses a tuner to adjust for temperature changes. If you can consistently throw within 0.1 gr, I don't think it matters at 100-200 yards. The thrower is so much quicker and allows you to easily adjust your load that it certainly has its advantages. The larger grain powders are a little less consistent in the thrower. I guess mainly it depends on the confidence you have in your technique.

Ive got two of them. They will throw n133 like a champ, get within a .1 of a grain or so. I just shoot short range. They vary a little on extruded stuff though like imr 4350 or imr 4831. Ball works fine. Doug

Neil Jones
inspite comments to the contrary published tests on another form and ssamples taken at a match does not support n133 being thrown at .1 from a harrells. neil jones and bruno, yes but again you can get away with less with 133.... pm me i have harrells i can sell you

I have had Harrells, Niel Jones, Lyman, RCBS, and Lee powder measures, and they are all dependent on the operator.
I am not a good powder measure operator. I have run large groups of throws which I have checked with a scale, and while they look consistent, there is almost always a "flier" of about .2 difference.
This is the reason I used my Chargemaster when shooting short range benchrest, at least it was always within .1.
There are many short range BR shooters who score very well using a powder measure.

My outdoor range is Kebly's home to the Super Shoot benchrest competition. During the Super Shoot all I see is a Harrell's powder throw at every shooters space. While I am not a short range benchrest type the guys who shoot benchrest love the things. VihtaVouri N133 is their darling for 6 PPC. :)

I forgot something, mine wont throw light charges like for a 9mm or 45acp. Those Dillons will or Ive got some old Rcbs or Lyman that will. Ive had mine bridge up, but I dont remember the powder. I think it was long extruded like 4831. So I weigh about every charge anyway. Throwing light and trickling up is the best. Dont even think about flake. Doug
