Is Harrel's powder measure the best way to go?

me thinks y
My outdoor range is Kebly's home to the Super Shoot benchrest competition. During the Super Shoot all I see is a Harrell's powder throw at every shooters space. While I am not a short range benchrest type the guys who shoot benchrest love the things. VihtaVouri N133 is their darling for 6 PPC. :)

me thinks you have poor vision. a look at the results sheets will show known shooters that use other than harrells. harrels is entry level, seldom used by top level shooters, niel jones and bruno, with chargemaster and lite taking over.

Well granted the vision is not what it once was but at the Super Shoot my walking around showed me Harrell's powder throws. Each shooter gets some bench space to work on their stuff and about all I saw was what I mentioned. We are talking about Kelbly's Range correct? This was the last year the event was held at Kelbly's. This is short range bench rest. The top shooters this year were Jeff Summers, Don Powell, Wayne Campbell, Jeff Reinhart, and Bart Sauter rounding out the top 5 shooters. This is an accurate shooter link to the event. I use a chargemaster but have never seen one at the Super Shoot which I mentioned.

your posts lack credibility.. just not a plauseable statement

Look I posted what I saw. Spare me the credibility nonsense. You have something to contribute to the thread other than a critique of my post then please do so. Your use of upper case says a lot about you. I am done with the thread and of course have a nice day. I believe I mentioned I have membership at Kelbly's and mentioned I am not a bench rest type. Possibly you missed that.

Usually my powder measure is far down on the list of things to blame when I don’t agg well in short range br. I’ve used Jones, Bruno,Redding, Harrels. I prefer the Jones. Kelbly’s can spank hard!

Here is a modified Harrells large measure beside a Harrells BR non bearing measure, Mike was the inspiration to do the mod on the large measure, now it only dispenses from approx 26 - 32gr of v133.
This modification is based on the Hensler insert which Jerry Hensler designed and was making as replacement inserts for some powder measures, I also have one of the Hensler inserts which was made for a Culver powder measure.
The Hensler inserts were extremely hard to find and those that had them wouldn't sell them, which is the reason Mike went into the powder measure business.

On this subject, a friend who attended the Super Shoot within the last four or five years told me that in the loading barn there were only a couple of shooters throwing charges. The rest were using some kind of electronic dispenser. For throwing charges with short range group powders, I have found that the most expensive Harrell is better than the others, and that the Jones is right up there with it. With any of them, technique and consistency matter. That old platitude about it not mattering how you do it as long as you are consistent, is pure bull. Believe me, I have put in the time to know for sure. My advice to new shooters is to buy a chargemaster and a suitable battery pack. Friends who have are quite pleased with their purchases.

I havent seen anybody throwing charges in many years. I see the measures still mounted on loading boxes, but nobody actually throwing at short range matches
I must be doing something wrong then, lol, a powder measure is a lot easier to travel with than a chargemaster or equivalent.
Learning to use a powder measure isn't easy though, as Boyd said above, technique and consistency matter.

Its just one more small box. Mine fits into an action packer i already carried with bullets, powder, and other accessories. My loading box does still have a harrels mounted on it at matches, and i can throw with anybody.

yep that's ok when I drive to a match but when I fly I can't even take everything I want to take now, so some things have to stay behind.

My range loading gear. The closest thing to 'high tech' is my coffee mug with a perfect mix of Sulawesi.

The powder measure is a one-off S.S.K.C. (Super Stock Kernel Cutter) based on a well tuned up Redding 3BR. The real secret is the duct tape holding the reservoir to the measure body. ;) Pay no attention to the baffle that's above the powder level. :) Not shown is the optional coffee grinder attachment for grinding whole bean coffee right on the spot for a delicious brew. Forget that 'coffee' most ranges brew up that has your guts in a roil about halfway though the 100 yd.

Sloppy Partner press that wiggles like a Hula girl, a Lee Auto Prime full of 205M's (they're supposed to explode in your hands if you load it with Federal primers) and bullets made in my gun room.

Good shootin' :) -Al

Yep...that's a '90s vintage Sears Craftsman 20" two drawer 'deep top' box. The newer three drawer boxes are similar but aren't as deep. The deep top holds both dies, the Arbor press, box of bullets, dial caliper, Mitutoyo .0001 micrometer, loading block, box of loaded ammo, primer tool, shooting glasses, a zip lock bag holding plastic bottles of Butch's and Hoppe's #9, a small plastic tub of patches, a bag with the Lucas rod guide and brushes and jags. and a few towels. A length of 3/16" steel rod through the clip locks makes sure the top doesn't pop open when carrying it. :(

They haven't been available for a while but I see used ones pretty often at garage sales, etc. They were available in both black or red. Facebook's Market Place is another good place to check. RemLine used to have an identical one as did KD Tools.

Nothing to do with powder measures but there it is..... ;)

Good shootin' -Al
