Another stock painting thread..

Keep the weight down so it can still be a LV for the guy you sell it to!
So gar, so good. Started at 26.0 ounces and it's at 26.4 right now and I would guess it'll dry a tad more. I'll block it down pretty good and add two more coats of clear, then hopefully call it good. Might end up gaining an ounce, maybe less is my guess. Weather was crap yesterday so I did this in my shop. It's got a few minor things going on that a final blocking out should fix. I'll finish up in my "paint room". Not a booth but a makesft one that works pretty well.

Edit..after looking at it better, just one area needs a little attention. I'll block that out pretty good and lightly all over, then shoot it again. Got to, to get the carbon fiber bottom finished. Had it masked to keep the root beer off of it. Will see soon but paint adds very little weight. No primer here of course either.

Well, it started off with a lesson in chemistry but it got better. It's not final judgement day yet but it did work pretty dang well. I did probably go just barely darker than my target but it didn't act like I thought it would and my eye was elsewhere while I sprayed the candy, if you know what I'm trying to say with that.
Nevertheless, the effect was pretty dramatic and with just a little practice, this system of "dying" a wood stock, will work. It's gonna be fine like it is after a little wet sanding a buffing...I think, anyway. This pic isn't very good but I'll post more in a day or so, after I get it more to my liking. It looks better in person. I'll get better pics later. @Bc'z

Wow!!!

This thing is really slick. Pics never do paint justice, for better or worse but this one is better than the pics. It just worked out right. Oh, and I love my new paint gun. The clear layed down for me about as well as any I've ever done.
Pics aren't great. I'll post more when it's all done and back together.
The root beer experiment was a success. It didn't highlight the grain because it and the surrounding wood both darkened but it's a transformation, still. Some super fine sanding scratches visible. I think wax will make them disappear..hard to see already. Want to wait a while before waxing it, at least a few weeks.
Excuse the mess. Looks like a bomb went off right now.

Looks amazing Mike, I bet it pops in the light!!

What spray gun did you aquire?
Sun does bring it alive. It's an Italco gun. Long story but I bought a DeVilbiss from Amazon and it got here but had been used and returned. But that gave me the chance to hold it and play with the knobs and stuff before sending it back. It felt like junk so I ordered this instead. It felt good and controls were smooth etc. Still getting use to it but that's what this experiment was for, before doing a customer's gun. Gave me a chance to get the feel of it and adjusting it. It sprays very good, in my limited experience.

Not the best pics but I sold the gun over the weekend, so these might be the best I can do for the finished product. Overall, it turned out really well. Like @Bc'z said, a gold leaf stripe would've set it off even more but, no complaints here. I definitely learned something with this experiment and the rootbeer kandy did great, after some playing with it. A big difference from my op and pics. I think it's much better and I couldn't have hoped for it to be much slicker. Very happy! The best part is, the guy that bought it passed on it before seeing the finished product.

Wow, that's a beautiful job and a beautiful rifle! Very nicely done!!

I've had many stocks finished by Brett and all are amazing!
Thanks Jim!
Some of my best fluting styles have come to be when things went completely off the rails! Lol.
Paul
Paul my 1st marble job on a LRB was a huge mistake that turned into multiple 3 layer marbled stocks across the country.
As long as a fella can learn from his mistakes I figure he's ahead of the game.

Lol! It was a nice gun but it's a RBRP. The guy who bought it will do fine with it but I'm just not built to load a gun from the right, on a bench. I made up my mind to sell it before I worked on the stock because if I were to keep it, I'd cut a port on the left. There'll be another one. He got a good deal and I made about $2/hr for the experience. Lol!
