So gar, so good. Started at 26.0 ounces and it's at 26.4 right now and I would guess it'll dry a tad more. I'll block it down pretty good and add two more coats of clear, then hopefully call it good. Might end up gaining an ounce, maybe less is my guess. Weather was crap yesterday so I did this in my shop. It's got a few minor things going on that a final blocking out should fix. I'll finish up in my "paint room". Not a booth but a makesft one that works pretty well.Keep the weight down so it can still be a LV for the guy you sell it to!
Well, it started off with a lesson in chemistry but it got better. It's not final judgement day yet but it did work pretty dang well. I did probably go just barely darker than my target but it didn't act like I thought it would and my eye was elsewhere while I sprayed the candy, if you know what I'm trying to say with that.
Nevertheless, the effect was pretty dramatic and with just a little practice, this system of "dying" a wood stock, will work. It's gonna be fine like it is after a little wet sanding a buffing...I think, anyway. This pic isn't very good but I'll post more in a day or so, after I get it more to my liking. It looks better in person. I'll get better pics later. @Bc'z
Thank you! The whole idea was just to slick up and old stock that had several dents and dings. One thing led to another and it wound up being an experiment to see how root beer candy would look over the top of what I thought was an ugly color wood stock.nice work!
Sun does bring it alive. It's an Italco gun. Long story but I bought a DeVilbiss from Amazon and it got here but had been used and returned. But that gave me the chance to hold it and play with the knobs and stuff before sending it back. It felt like junk so I ordered this instead. It felt good and controls were smooth etc. Still getting use to it but that's what this experiment was for, before doing a customer's gun. Gave me a chance to get the feel of it and adjusting it. It sprays very good, in my limited experience.Looks amazing Mike, I bet it pops in the light!!
What spray gun did you aquire?
Thatll work everytime.Oh yeah, it gained .6(6 tenths) of an ounce. I can live with that. It started at 26.0 but that was after a fair amount of sanding before I thought to weigh it. Now 26.6ounces, fwiw. @Dusty Stevens
Wow, that's a beautiful job and a beautiful rifle! Very nicely done!!Not the best pics but I sold the gun over the weekend, so these might be the best I can do for the finished product. Overall, it turned out really well. Like @Bc'z said, a gold leak stripe would've set it off even more but, no complaints here. I definitely learned something with this experiment and the rootbeer kandy did great, after some playing with it. A big difference from my op and pics. I think it's much better and I couldn't have hoped for it to be much slicker. Very happy! The best part is, the guy that bought it passed on it before seeing the finished product.
Thank you Paul! It was an experiment that went right and I learned something from it.Wow, that's a beautiful job and a beautiful rifle! Very nicely done!!

Thanks Jim!I've had many stocks finished by Brett and all are amazing!
Paul my 1st marble job on a LRB was a huge mistake that turned into multiple 3 layer marbled stocks across the country. Some of my best fluting styles have come to be when things went completely off the rails! Lol.

Lol! It was a nice gun but it's a RBRP. The guy who bought it will do fine with it but I'm just not built to load a gun from the right, on a bench. I made up my mind to sell it before I worked on the stock because if I were to keep it, I'd cut a port on the left. There'll be another one. He got a good deal and I made about $2/hr for the experience. Lol!Thanks Jim!

As long as a fella can learn from his mistakes I figure he's ahead of the game.
You sold it?
That didn't take long, great lookin rifle!
