HOUSTON WAREHOUSE

Great read. Testing and improving rifles. 0.050"-0.080" groups.

Here is an intro from the Daily Bulletin, summarizing the article:

I know, or knew, several shooters who participated in Virgil’s Houston Warehouse experiments.

Most lack your enthusiasm for the practical information garnered.

That’s my way of saying that the work ups simply did not translate well in the real world.
Too complicated and time consuming for my hunting and casual BR shooting. I want to read the best info even if I cannot use it. I am happy with under .400" groups. These top shooters devote a lot of time and money in what they do. They improve the techniques even if they are way to much for us . Some of the top shooters are probably putting well over $10K into time and travel every year . Attending 5 or more matches a year out of state.

I consider myself a pretty decent Benchrest Competitor, both in score and group.

Your statement…”I want to read the best info” simply does not apply to the Houston Warehouse. It is not the best info available. Far from it.

I don’t mean to sound rude, but as it pertains to the real world of extreme accuracy shooting such as is found in Short Range Group and Score, it is a bunch of BS.

We have really got to lay off this warehouse talk. Its amazing as to how many times it comes up. The guys that were actually involved in all the lore never seen the magic, it only happened when nobody was there. Seemed like everybody that was involved in the main testing had the same reactions speedy did later on

I loved and was completely amazed when I first got into this sport and stumbled across the Houston warehouse story. However, the longer I’ve been in the sport, the more people I seem to discuss it with that call varying levels of BS on it. These are greats in the sport, that state they were there or worked with folks that were there. These are the same people that have taught me more about this sport than any book, video or warehouse could. I don’t have the knowledge base nor evidence to call the warehouse study BS; however I now consider it a fun anecdotal read.

The only way ive heard of the Houston Warehouse is through this site. First time I read a thread about it, looked like some sort of magic button to reloading. So I searched more threads to learn more...

And it seems with every thread people become more comfortable saying Virgil was essentially lying about shooting small groups. Maybe he really shot at 50 yards?

No, I doubt anybody is saying he was lying. From the shooters I have talked to through the years, he and several other shooters did shoot a lot of extremely small groups. The argument has always been that very little of it translated to shooting out doors in a Match.

Any well put together Benchrest Rifle with the right bullets and tune should be able to shoot one hole groups in an extremely controlled environment.

But we do not shoot matches in a controlled environment.

like Speedy said In that video. Tune the darn thing in the wind, because that is what the bullet is going to encounter in a Match.

I have access to two 100yd underground rifle ranges, both side by side.no wind no conditions to negotiate.my 6ppc HV shoots small groups..very small inside there.i can't shoot those groups in real world conditions consistently.the tunnels are great for load development and testing a rifles accuracy also it doesn't matter what the weather is doing outside.

Do you find that the best groups in the tunnel also shoot the best in real world conditions?

The key points about shooting in the tunnel is there is no variables in the conditions.no wind,no mirage and the temperature is constantly cool..(comfortable).one doesn't have to worry about flags or rushing to get you record shots of in a chosen condition.all one has to do is make sure your rifle is tuned set up on the machine rest, tracking properly and away you go.can I shoot these small groups in real world conditions consistently..no I can't and could Tony Boyer..im not so sure and I can't shoot like Tony Boyer.
