6.5x284 or 264 win mag?

Wondering if there is much of a difference in performance between a 6.5x284 verses the 264 win mag? The situation would be deer hunting with in 350 yards.

200 ft./s maybe speed comes at a price of even less barrel life. I’ve had a 6.5 x 284 norma for about eight years on average I get about 1000 rounds or a little bit more with good accuracy after that it starts to decline

I hunt with both and after load development both will last for many years of hunting. I shoot 140s in 6.5-284 with Retumbo @ 3,015. I've dropped several bulls in their tracks at 420-440 yards with proper shot placement.

I prefer the 6.5 WM, shooting 156 Berger @ 3,030 fps using RL-23. I feel it gives me a bit of advantage at longer ranges for heavier animals.

Both are very accurate and have plenty of velocity at the ranges the OP would use for deer, but both can surpass his needs.

Look and see if you can get 264 brass it may be hard to find I know you can find 6.5X284 brass

6.5x284 is available currently, just check your normal suppliers.

.264 Win Mag. can be found but is limited right now to either Winchester or Nosler manufacturer. The Nosler is roughly twice the cost of the Winchester. Blue Collar has the best price on Winchester and I don't bother with Nosler except for some bullets.

Deer hunting at 350 yards or under will work with either of these cartridges and dozens of others. Be sure to practice field rests, get a rangefinder and a good scope. Practice a lot to insure confidence.

I've put together a few 6.5 prc's and have been pushing 156gr Berger's 3000 fps out of a 24" barrel with Reloder 26 or N565. These are strictly hunting rifles and accuracy has been awesome with all of them. They all shoot under 2" groups at 500 yards with with the best group printing just under an inch. Adg, Lapua and Peterson brass available for it and plenty of powder choices also.

Local Bass Pro got in 10 boxes of Remington 264 at $86 a box!
has Privi, Nosler and Win 264 brass

I would go with the .264. Don't shoot it so fast you that you can boil water on it, clean frequently, try to find a copper fouling eliminator power that works. In a hunting rifle it should outlast you.

Always amazes me re the criticism the 264 win mag gets regarding barrel life, with few comments on other magnums especially the new 26 and 28 noslers and the hot rock Weatherby chamberings. Speed costs just like in most things. Buy 2 barrels and get them fitted at the same time if you are worried.

If you're looking for more performance in a 6.5 then the 6.5-284 offers I'd look at a 6.5 SAUM or 6.5 WSM.

Generally, pressure being equal the larger case capacity will always shoot faster so the 264 Win mag wins the velocity contest but depending on barrel length the difference in velocity from the smallest case capacity of the group, 6.5-284, to the largest with the 264 Winnie will probably only be around 100 fps.

Another option you could consider would be to take a look at the Weatherby 6.5 RPM. Case capacity is about the same as the 264 Win, maybe a tiny bit more, but it runs on a standard bolt face action and it too is a beltless case design.

Choosing between those two for that purpose, I'd go with -284 just for the ease. If I wanted to work for a 6.5 I would (and did) go 6.5-06AI

I love the 6.5x284 and I also love the comment above that "belts are for pants."

At the risk of hi jacking this thread I ask...What will the 6.5 Creedmore, 26 Nosler and 6.5 PRC do that the 6.5/06, 6.5/06 Ackley, 6.5 x 284 and 6.5 x 55 wont do? Im not even going to mention the .264 WM, 6.5 WSM or 6.5 x 300 WBY.
