Thoughts on replacing a 6mm Remington with what.

6BR no turn neck.tikka 595 action.screw on a custom 1-8 twist barrel.65-105 grn bullets and your good to go.unless you want to go down the custom action route.

Are you using a magazine or a single shot if you are using a magazine what mods were required? Thanks

I'm with JSH. 6 Creedmoor comes closest to the 6mm Rem. (which I've owned and shot for around 50 years) Has almost as much capacity, better shoulder angle and good neck, plus brass is readily available -- as is loaded ammo should it later fall into hands of a non-reloader.

In a short action with heavy for caliber bullets running it as a repeater the 6 Creedmoor will actually yield more useable case capacity than the Rem 6mm. And like has already been mentioned a couple times, brass quality as well as availability definitely favors the 6CM as well as many other 6's.

I may not have 20 yrs to enjoy it OR remember which way to point the muzzle! However, keep your thoughts/ choices coming. I get the big bucks because I make the big/good decisions!

I'm 70. Don't buy or build guns with the thought of resale. Might as well just get common stuff. Life is too short. Build to please YOU!

No one in my family has any interest in firearms at all so someone has to dispose of them and that has been discussed. I feel it’s prudent not to build rifles that are way out in left field but to build things that I will enjoy and hopefully will be able to move. There is a gentleman right now trying to sell fantastic packages at bargain basement prices and finding it very difficult to find buyers on this Forum that has over 63,000 potential customers. There are a lot of firearms people who don’t reload and, for example don’t even know what a 6BR or your lovely 6 PPC is .Try giving them a chance to purchase your GEM !! Not meaning to be a criticism but….it’s something that I am sure all of us have/will realize. I am looking for suggestions that I may not have thought of AND will be possible to interest a possible reloader when it comes time. I don’t own anything…. I’m just the caretaker.

Have you entertained the 6mm ARC? Round count 4,000 plus seems to be realistic. This chambering gives up surprisingly little to the 6mm Rem from my perspective.

I have been messing with a light weight CZ527 w a 22"barrel chambered in 6mm ARC & it is still my favorite field gun.

6BR feeds reliably for me, but if you’re used to speed, 6x47 Lapua. Peterson sells brass for both, and of course Lapua sells 6 BR.

I’ve had pretty much everything but the 6XC. For varmints and predators, I shoot a 6BR and Bart’s 68 Avenger. The 70 grain Varmageddon is a not so distant second favorite.

I’ve always had a fondness for the 6mm Remington with my old experiences with it and the Swift in the prairie dog fields for long range shots . The Swift shot 55’s and the 6mm shot 75-85grns. The Swift has Barrel burning hassles,stretching/ trimming hassles, and obtaining enough of them hassles. The only problem with the 6mm Remington that I can see is finding a quantity of cases as I like everything else about it. The question is what choices do I have for replacement? One thought is the 243 BUT.. it’s unkind with barrels like the Swift so a better choice please . Another choice is the 6BR which would be great BUT.. it’s difficult to get it to work in a repeat which is a must (!) .
My question is what choices can you give me that , Function in a repeater , Don’t require lots of trimming , Are easily obtainable in quantity, and Would be suitable for distance shots (75-95 grainers?)
Your thoughts along w/twist and bullet choice/ wt. please.

I have a .243 Ackley Improved with a 12 twist Hart that shoots 55-85 grain bullets excellently. I fireform with 70 TNTs and the fireform loads group awesome.

I tried many times to get it to feed from a standard 700 BDL, and no matter what I tried…no bueno. However I found that with Badger Ornance M5 bottom metal, it will feed like butter from single stack mag.

I don’t have to trim very often, and it flat out performs.

No mods required really,standard plastic mag should work fine.aftermarket steel one you might have to tweak the feed lips slightly

I automatically add the cost of a new barrel into the price of any gun I buy. Hot 6mms dont last very long. Buy, use, replace.

I would think anything that shoots over 40 gr of powder would be a barrel burner. Not what you want for PD. I have a 6BR with 4200 shots down a Kreiger barrel. Still shoots well under 1/2" with good bullets. Always single load. I still would if it magazine feed for safety reasons. Single feed isn't that bad. Somewhere around 5 seconds to load another cartridge. I had one one the best gunsmiths bore scope the bore. He said it looked like 1000 rounds fired. The 6BR 60 gr bullets 33.3 gr of powder. My 6BRX 34-34.5 gr powder. For PD I would go for the twist to shoot 80-85 gr bullets for longer distance.

You might want to take a look at the .22 Nosler & .224 Valkyrie. These normally are AR cartridges so magazines & feeding are typically not a problem - no matter what platform you want to shoot them out of.

Depends on how far you want to shoot (wind drift). My guess is that high FPS 22 cal have a lot of wind drift after 300-400 yards. Can be very windy on the open prairies. The 6BR and 6BRX have good ballistics numbers. No matter what my favorite cal was I would take a 6BRX, a 223 and something like a 22HRM rimfire.

Very true. There are so many heavy for caliber .224 bullets available these days that are worth a look at. If building around a Valkyrie, I would select the bullet I wanted to shoot first & then get the optimal/compromise barrel twist. Bullets 69 to 90gr are off the shelf now & the load data is extensive for short or long barrels. Just a thought....

Gasper, if you go 6 Rem, I will help you out with brass.

As you are aware, obtaining brass and dies for many calibers can be difficult.

6 BRX and 6 XC with shortish throats for varmints are a blessing. Try and stay away from 8208, R#15, H and IMR 4895, Varget and you will be blessed.

In 6mm it seems that I am leaning towards the 243AI and the 6XC . I think the 243AI would be the sensible one to go with. I’m wondering for a Varmint rifle for those longer shots the bullet choice,weight,range , the barrel length and twist .

Why not a 6mm rem?

It's really the same as a 243 WIN. Shot a 6mm Rem for 40 years. 243 and 6 Rem are barrel burners. You probably need a new barrel after every PD hunting trip. I paid $725 for my last barrel.
