Thoughts on replacing a 6mm Remington with what.

I’ve always had a fondness for the 6mm Remington with my old experiences with it and the Swift in the prairie dog fields for long range shots . The Swift shot 55’s and the 6mm shot 75-85grns. The Swift has Barrel burning hassles,stretching/ trimming hassles, and obtaining enough of them hassles. The only problem with the 6mm Remington that I can see is finding a quantity of cases as I like everything else about it. The question is what choices do I have for replacement? One thought is the 243 BUT.. it’s unkind with barrels like the Swift so a better choice please . Another choice is the 6BR which would be great BUT.. it’s difficult to get it to work in a repeat which is a must (!) .
My question is what choices can you give me that , Function in a repeater , Don’t require lots of trimming , Are easily obtainable in quantity, and Would be suitable for distance shots (75-95 grainers?)
Your thoughts along w/twist and bullet choice/ wt. please.

Both of my PD guns are single shot, 20VT & .223. I'm in the planning stages for a 6 BR.

I've read that MDT magazines will reliably feed the 6 BR, but haven't tried one. They come in a 10 & 12 round magazines. They are also very expensive. Priced at $90 & $100.

Maybe some folks here that have used them will let us know how functional they are.

I am not worried about barrels, most have threads on at least one end.

I hate to admit this, but with availability of certain components, 6Creedmoor. I have two I picked up here. One is just broken in, under 60 rounds. The other is probably half done at 8-900 rounds. The high round count barrel flings 87 Vmax into a nice cluster at 200, good enough for prairie dog work. Will know more at extended range in the next 5-6 days.
Right now at the moment I would t hesitate to do coyote duty.

Reports I have from two buddies, the 22CM needs investigated as well.

257 Roberts AI ? Nosler load data for their 85gr BT Varmint suggests 3500fps possible with that .388 BC bullet.

Nosler 257 Roberts +P brass is available at MidwayUSA....albeit rather pricey.....

Just a thought.

Maybe consider a 22BR with an 8 or faster twist barrel. 80 grainers have plenty of
speed and good BC's. Barrel life is good too.
I was a 22 250 guy for a long time and now have 6 dashers and a 260 AI but that
22BR is my favorite out to 500+ yards.
I have a 22BR w/7.5 twist to shoot the75- 85.5(??)’s but haven’t shot it yet. It was to be a heavyweight bullet 22-250 . Now I’ll find out. Now for the 6mm choice. What compares/ beats the 6mm Rem. ?

Twist/ bullets??
Click on the main site and scroll down the left side and click on .243 Win. you'll find a lot of information on both the .243 & .243 Ackley Improved. Along with my load data as well as data from several other contributors. Mine is a 9 Twist and I shoot the 107 SMK's

Howdy !

Until you mentioned a desire to stay away from brass " trimming ", I was going to suggest my wildcat
" DEEP 6 ".

Deep 6 chamber is cut by running a 6mm Remington reamer in " short ", for a nominal .466" base diam
Cae capacity is 51.2gr H2O. Compare to .243Win @ 54gr, 6mm Remington @ 55gr H2O.

51.2gr is a useful case capacity in 6mm calibre. DEEP 6 uses the same VLD-friendly neck lg that the 6mm Remington uses. This keeps the powder combustion " turbulence point " located inside the neck, which is great for barrel longevity.

The wildcat case is formed using 7 X 64 Brenneke as the parent brass. 7 X 64 is .308 bolt face compatible, " rimless "; and LR primed. I use Norma brass, and have had no troubles in obtaining new cases when desired.

My DEEP 6 rifle was chambered w/ a custom barrel using the method described above.
* I have often thought it might be possible to use an exisiting 6mm Remington barrel ( not shot out ), have the chamber shortened to .466" base diam; and have a few threads added to the outside of the barrel to allow mounting to the action. * The rifled portion of the barrel would not necessarily have to be shortened..... just the chamber. The likley candidates would be 6mm Remington M-700s, 40X's; and some
M-77 Rugers I believe..

Deep 6 cartirdges are loaded / re-loaded utilizing off-the-shelf 6mm Remington dies. They don't need to be custom.

So.... for a shooter already set-up for 6mm Remington, Deep 6 ( IMHO ) makes for a potential practical option. It certainly solves the brass issue. BUT..... it's a wildcat, and therefore some brass forming/trimming is of course required.

I shoot 6mm 95-107gr bullets in my 29" 1-8 SS Broughton 5-groove barrel, the 95 T-MK being my current got-to bullet for varmint / target work. I'm very happy with the performance capabilities DEEP 6 gives me.

Gentlemen , thank you very much for your feedback and time. It is appreciated! The other thing that I have to keep in mind is my age as I’m getting up there in age and it won’t be long until I’m not going to be able to enjoy my pride and joy and I hope to be able to sell it instead of my potential customers saying, NICE but… what am I going to do with this 6mm Louden Boomer!! I may not have 20 yrs to enjoy it OR remember which way to point the muzzle! However, keep your thoughts/ choices coming. I get the big bucks because I make the big/good decisions!

6BR no turn neck.tikka 595 action.screw on a custom 1-8 twist barrel.65-105 grn bullets and your good to go.unless you want to go down the custom action route.

I'm with JSH. 6 Creedmoor comes closest to the 6mm Rem. (which I've owned and shot for around 50 years) Has almost as much capacity, better shoulder angle and good neck, plus brass is readily available -- as is loaded ammo should it later fall into hands of a non-reloader.
