Rem. 40X

My 40-X is on early one. The receiver is marked only 40-X, nothing else, and has no vent hole on the right side. The serial # has the suffix B. Stock was that wooden one with wide rounded forend. The stainless barrel is drilled/tapped front and rear for iron sights, was 27 or 28"before rechamber, .22cal. My question is - what kind of barrel is this? Who supplied Remington back then for the early 40X's?

What Dusty said. There is a lot of misinformation out there about barrels used by Remington. A heart stamp, does not mean Hart barrel, etc.

Early 40x barrels were chromoly. Could have been a replacement barrel duplicating the factory barrel. Any marking left near the chamber area? Factory length should have been 27 1/4.

Its a fine Remington barrel. This 1976 gun has thousands of rounds down the tube. Its single shot 243 Win.

The throat is long shot out, but grandson can still hit an egg @ 300 yards.

The 1970s guns had a choice of barrels. H2 is heavy, no taper. I bought the S2 lighter, tapered 27 1/4" barrel. No vent hole on mine.

Glad Remington made such an outstanding piece. I wouldn’t have thought. Cut back a little and re-chambered then braked so I don’t know for sure, but 27-1/4 seems right. Original markings not stamped look etched. Taper about like #7 Shilen.
