I saw a picture of the SS base, a lock washer, and the brass case, wondering if it just "snaps" in place? Can it be reloaded? They're trying to get 3000 FPS out of a suppressed 13" bbl.

Just read the ballistics release on SIG's new cartridge. 135g projectile in a 16" barrel at 3000 fps. Looks interesting. But then notice the 80,000 psi chamber pressure.?!? I realize it utilizes a hybrid case to accommodate the high pressure. Am I wrong in assuming the handloader will limited to...

If the M14 (abt 10+ lbs) was less than manageable all up w a 20 rd mag, what do they think a short bbl, light framed weapon will do w the velocity jacked up will do?
Muzzle blast from that specified short bbl will need to be reckoned with....accuracy potential of the shooter will be hampered. For every action there is an opposite and equal reaction - then factor in noise and muzzle blast as tangible detriments.
Out tax dollars in action.

I think I saw something about this on utube the other week and they were built by Sig. I don't have a comment on the cartridge but the rifle was bad ass. I would like to see a civilian version in 308.

I watched a forgotten weapons vid the other day and it seems that the only time the soldier will use the 80,000 psi ammo is in a real shooting war. All target range and training will be with 50,000-60,000 psi practice ammo. The M16 was developed so the soldier could have a lighter rifle and carry more ammo now they are back to ammo that weights the same as 308win and a rifle that weights over 11 lbs. Are these new guys stronger than they were in the 60s 70s and 80s?

I don't suppose the muzzle blast will be too bad. Maybe deafen 2-300K more troops.

The rifle is 16 pounds loaded with the sight and suppressor. It's meant to be suppressed all the time.

The cartridge is bi-metal operating at 80,000 PSI, with specialized ammo operating at higher pressure.

Everything else will have to be proven.

Time will tell but close quarter work is going to be much slower. If you ever tried the M1 Carbine, the CAR 15 or the M4 and compared them to the M14 in close you'll understand the problem. Then 8magine working in close with a rifle nearly twice as heavy as the M14.

The 5.56 was designed to wound not kill, in addition to being able to haul more rounds. Each killing takes 1 guy off the battlefield, each wounding takes multiple people out of the fight.

there was a thread about this here awhile back. i think the prototypes ( first 50 or something like that) cost 200K each. it will be interesting to understand how it operates and when us civilians can get the guns and ammo

The .277 SIG Fury hybrid cartridge
The push button, foldable SIG precision stock is fully adjustable.
With the Cross, also comes the new cartridge. Basically, the .277 is the same 6.8x51 mm ammunition developed for the US Army’s Next Generation Squad Weapon program – a high pressure, hybrid-cased cartridge that couples a steel base with a plastic case. The SIG Sauer 6.8mm hybrid ammunition is designed for increased penetration at greater distances, and according to SIG's claims, it can reach 3000 fps velocity from a 16″ barrel. The .277 SIG Fury is awaiting approval from SAAMI, probably in time for the next SHOT Show.
