.338 EDGE

My first "Edge", that I would rather more correctly call the 338/300 Ultra, was done on a brand new stainless Sendero in 338 Ultra when they 1st came out in 2002. Sent it out to be opened up to the the 338/300 by Jerry Simison back in the day.

I had been talking to him in the past about doing a 338 Imperial Magnum, but when Remington came out with the Ultra, it was an easier path with better brass.

DE wasn't the 1st to neck up the Ultra, but he did promote it successfully.

I don't know that anyone ever said they did. I know Shawn will be the first to tell you he's not the first person to ever neck up a 300 Rum to 338.

I built an Edge in the early years back when all that was available was the Wyatt’s extended box. Never shot anything but 300 grain SMK’s loaded to a COL of 3.78”. Still shoots fantastic

I note that users really love their Edges. Many configurations but they are all really effective.
dont let a single shot hunting rifle stop you.
for excellent REPEATABLE ammo keep the bullet out of the shoulder/neck junction.
yep that tends to mean long, but it works. i shoot my edge at 2k with 300's

I did a DIY build with a bugholes.com bugnut on a 700 action in a KRG bravo (CIP mags).

My solution to the oal issue is to have a 300gr single shot load and a mag length load with either 300 Scenar or a 250 Scenar and a 250 hunting bullet. The single loads are for 1+ mile target shooting, the others for distances under 1500 yards(which is the bulk of my options most of the year). Yeah, a standard 338 RUM or 33 Nosler are going to compare ballistically to the 3.70 oal loads in the magazine, but it gives great flexibility to a guy like me just getting started in these large case magnums.

Besides, with the added KRG weights, MTU barrel, and scope it is close to 20 lbs, so it is not a good hunting rifle anyway.

What I would really like to pursue is solid bullets with a +P throat, but I'm not made of money or time, nor can I find but a few powders that are suitable.

teds custom in OK. built mine and did a fantastic job on it.
He goes by shortgrass on long range hunting forum.

Edge performance with solids is pretty impressive.

I load for 4 of them.....two of mine plus a hunting buddy and my nephew. My reamer @ 4.08 with 300 Berger Hunting. ADG brass and RL33 in 3 and h 1000 in the other.

LOVE them to death, but prefer to PLINK with my 6-47L. BUT when we stretch it out way into the teens, there isn't much better!!

Just trying to picture an edge in one of my guns. With 50% more bullet and powder than I’ve used, I’m a little in the dark on how that may effect barrel length and contour.

I think that'll largely depend on if this is going to be something that'll be a hunting rifle where weight is maybe more of a concern and will get shot less frequently or something that's for shooting on a more regular basis where a heavier rifle is more of a benefit.

My edge is for banging steel so a 30-32” MTU contour.

A moderate weight hunter rifle for a few shots isn’t that bad.

I have had 6 or 7 Edges built over the years... None have been what I would call hunting/ pack rifle. They lay in the back seat if a further shoot opportunity comes along... Ever single one has been a 30 inch barrel... One has been single shot the rest mag feed from 4 inch wyatts... My last 4 Edges have all had a OAL 3.92 with the 300 grain Bergers... Right now I have the DE U-Tube build rifle and a brand new Edge with a 30 inch Proof Carbon barrel on it I haven't got a scope on yet...

4.06 or so keeps the base of bullet( not boat tail) out of the neck shoulder junction....much easier to control neck tension and shot to shot performance....single shot no mag.... you need a back up shot simple drop one in.......i shoot targets

If you are going to build a repeater Edge the extended box is a must. The action needs to be modified (mag recess extended to the rear) as well as the bolt stop to give more room on the back end.

Get a good smith or take it really slow with a dremel. I did the latter and it turned out well.

I have done it with my milling machine, and bought them ready to go from Kauger.
