Stiller's Cobra

About 20 years ago, I travelled to Wylie Texas to interview a new action maker named Jerry Stiller. I was very impressed with the knowledge of this engineer. He showed me the actions that he was building at that time. All were aluminum with steel inserts and all were flat bottomed.

One of the actions shown was the Cobra, and it was a shortened version of his flagship the Viper. I have owned a Viper and they are great actions.

After "cutting back" on my shooting about a year ago, I was re-introduced to the Cobra. As many of you have read on this forum, my friend Ricky Reeves found this rifle at a yard sale. It was so ugly, that he named it Mutt. However, as another friend stated, "Pretty is as pretty does". The Mutt had a 6PPC barrel when I first saw it and it had already won two matches for Ricky. I decided to trade for it and I added a 6mm Dasher barrel. I won the very first 600 yard in which I participated with the Mutt using the new Dasher barrel. The Mutt just shot too well to leave it unpainted and looking like something the dog dragged up (as we say in the south). I had it painted by a friend at a local auto body shop and it looks decent now.

The yard sale "Mutt" shoots very well. Yesterday, I carried it to a friend's farm (where he has a 600 yard range) and shot a few rounds to get zeroed for a 600 yard match on 6/18. The first load I tried did not impress me at all, but the second one in the 6mm Dasher Mutt was great (at least for my ability). The group pictured is 3 shots at 600 yards without wind flags. It consisted of 32.2 grains of Varget/ CCI 400 primers and Bart's 105 gr Infinity bullets seated to "jump" .020". This load had shot well at 100 yards, so I thought that I would check it at 600. I used the 5x-50x Delta Stryker that I recently tested. The 3 shots measured .960 inches center to center. Now if I can get it to shoot like that Saturday in the ~100 degree heat, I will be delighted. James PS-the picture at the right is my 100 yard range.

James, I always enjoy your posts. You have accumulated lots of good stories over the years and you know how to present them way better than most...especially myself. Keep em coming buddy.

Mike, a friend of mine (Ricky Reeves) has signed up to hold UBR matches. he lives near Haynesville, LA which is in extreme northwest LA. When he gets started, maybe you and a few of the other UBR shooters can come down and teach us the ins and outs of shooting UBR. James

My Stiller Viper SS, a Viper in Stainless Steel. Was chambered in 6BR at Stiller's shop. It has won many 600 yd. F-Class matches for me. It's a drop port and just a joy to shoot. This is one of the last made by Stiller.

I think he sent me a message a day or so ago. I replied but didn't hear back from him. Glad he got it set up, though and I'd love to come down there and shoot. I hope we can make it happen. Keep us posted.
