MT to Vermont with pistol.

So my daughter is a traveling nurse going from MT to work in Vermont. Her shortest route takes her into Canada some where in Michigan. She is young , single, attractive and carries a pistol, but don't know if there is any way she can take it across the border. She don't want to leave it behind, and I don't want her to either. Any options to take here side arm, or can she even take it across the states with just a MT conceal permit. ? Help. !!

Being from the NE, the states she has to pass through. I’d highly highly advise her not to. One hollow point round can land you in hot water. That’s without a firearm. Yes it’s true. States I’m referring to also do not recognize anybody’s permits.

I live in Michigan and bringing a concealed carry pistol to Canada is a huge no no. There are special papers required to be filled out and approved months in advance for pistols into Canada. I would seriously advise against it.

1)Can't go into C with a pistol
2)It is legal to travel with a handgun.
3) generally, it must be unloaded, locked in a case, separate from the passenger compartment
4)On the trip if she leaves it in the car, (trunk) locked up, and doesn't go into C, and doesn't do anything that would cause her to be searched, then it basically is no issue.
5) Or just send it to an FFl in VT, pick it up when she is there. Not a wild idea at all.

Stay outta Jersey with hollowpoints...hell, stay outta Jersey cause no one wants to go or be there anyhow.

Some of the states I’m referring do not “recognize” federal travel laws. I believe even the NRA manual recommends against this. It’s not worth it.

I can’t add anything to the above. Me? Ship the pistol, get in the car with her and take the slightly longer southern route thru Illinois, etc.
40 years ago, two Mounties gave me the hard look and 1/2 hour of questioning because I had a Bowie knife in my suitcase in the trunk. Don’t go into Canada!

Thank- you all for the input. I'm not thrilled about her driving over there. Couldn't talk her out of it. She will drive thru some jungles getting there. We live in a small town and she has not been in the big cities. She will be in a small rural area in northern Vermont for her job. Looks like a decent town, it just the ride getting there. Flying would be better, but needs a rig when she gets there. Probably only be 3 months on that job. Her dog goes with her everywhere too so its going to be along journey.

GO WITH HER!! Make it a father/daughter bonding trip and fly back. It shouldn’t take more than 2 long days with 2 drivers. Small town girl out on her own? Anything can happen on the road these days.
I just got back to Delaware. My son gave ME a stern talking to about being careful driving around town. It seems car jacking has become very common here in Joe’s hometown.

This is the best link I have found regarding gun laws, plan out her trip through the US. - https://www.handgunlaw.us/
There is is no way she will be allowed to legally take a handgun into Canada, should she triy it and is caught then she is really in deep do-do, jail time, attorney fees, etc.
Also be aware that even though carrying may be legal in many states there are many municipalities that still do not allow it.
Study the link I posted, it has a lot of good advice.

Being originally from Canada, now a naturalized American and a solid "gunny" type, I don't even go back there to visit relatives. NO handguns whatsoever, and if your daughter plans on taking her pup, even the pup has to have "papers" all arranged prior to entering Canada. Remember, it's a socialist state and the reason I no longer live or visit there.

My advice considering all you mention: Go the southern longer route and save all the potential hassles related to her pistol and pup, do all her traveling in the USA and completely avoid Canada. She'll be very glad she did.

Vermont State constitution guarantees the right to carry with a few exceptions(no schools, courts, felons, etc.) no need for a permit.
Cross into Canada with a handgun....absolutely not!

Even in the US you have to deal with borderline commie states like New Jersy, New York and Mass and their draconian handgun laws. You had better familiarize yourself with them and stick to a US route. If she intends to carry the gun on her person she will be in trouble with several states if caught.

Don't get me started on the Canada thing. Probably around 40 years ago I went up there to repossess a hunting dog I never got paid for (long story). A local guy I knew from that area took me to the crooks home where I couldn't get anyone to come to the door. I loaded up the dog and the two puppies that crook had not sold yet. The local contact took me to a veterinary where I got health papers and headed back for the border. I had a young gal of color as the border agent. She asked me the same set of questions 3 times. Also there was a Police car parked nearby. I was so happy to get out of there and I ain't never going back. Also, I knew better than to take a gun with me on that trip. I can't imagine how much worse it is there by now with the knothead that is in charge.

Which states is it illegal to posess hollow points?
