105 Hybrid lost cause in 6BR?

I have a new 26" barrel I was working up loads for yesterday. Not impressed.

I was just doing a charge test 29.0-30.2 varget in 0.2 gr increments. My previous barrel load was 29.2 varget, but with the 105 VLD. I was unable to get VLDs this go around, so picked up the Hybrids.

My 29.2 load shows the best SD and ES, 2 and 4 respectively, but the groups are horrible. Couldn't get a group of THREE smaller than 1.3 MOA. That is unacceptable. Normally, I have no problem getting 0.5 MOA.

Is there hope that seating depth will tune this load? I am currently 0.015" off the lands.

106 Hybrids? Could You mean 109’s. If that’s the case, I know about 6 shooters who tried them in the BRA with poor results. They decided the 109 may be better suited in a Dasher, or on up?

I am not Berger guy with their over 90 gr 6mm bullets. But if all your doing is jumping you might be missing the boat. I have been through about 20 6mm barrels with 105 class bullets and jumped in 1 barrel. Start at .020 in and back up. I bet you fond a spot before you jump the t works. At least give it a try.

Ok, 105 Berger Hybrids. I have 2 1/8 twist barrels that love them. I jump them .015”. Maybe I could improve by putting them in the lands? But I’ve been out for some time, and don’t see getting any until Berger starts putting them out.

My experience with 105gr hybrids is that they like to be seated 30-50 thau off the lands. I am running now VLDs and I seat them much closer to the lands. I cannot speak of Varget since we do not have this in Europe, but I use N140 and I came across satisfying results with 105 hybrids at 30-31gr.

The Berger 105 Hybrid is still a very popular bullet that is widely applied. You will find it popular in many XTC, PRS, Mid Range, and other games where the Dasher and BRA is used, which pushes it a little harder than a BR.

Not long ago, there was a series of articles on the Precision Rifle Blog that covered some equipment usage that included the 105 Hybrid, and another series on seating depth testing that also happened to include the 105 Hybrid tested in several different rifles.

That seating depth article series talked about the concepts that certain rigs and bullets can benefit from a wider search in the seating depth testing and how some bullets show good performance in several seating depths counting jam and more than one jump node.

Here is one of the articles in the series. Look about half way down where they start showing the testing details. There are links to the other articles in the series if you need some nightstand reading.

You will find the 105 Hybrid pops up a lot in Dasher, and you will also find a few alternatives in the case where you find your 1:8 barrel doesn't like it. The Berger twist calculator shows it as slightly marginal at sea level, which means it may or may not work.

And here are their recommended alternates for a 1:8 twist.

Good Luck in your search. I'm amazed you found any 105 Hybrids at all.

I'd lean towards a bad batch of bullets, a bad barrel or poor machine work. I've shot many 105 hybrids in a BR with an 8 twist barrel with great success. I really doubt the twist rate has anything to do with poor performance in this instance.

the 105 hybrids can work in an 8 twist.....but you will likely have to push them pretty hard to get them to stabilize.
I'm running a 105 RDF, which is almost identical in length to a Berger Hybrid, in a 28" 1:8 6BR barrel and they stabilize just fine. I shot some at 275' ASL and had sub MOA groups at 645 and 800 yards. Not sure on velocity at the moment but the powder charge is 29.4 grains of varget.
