Rem 40X bolt face - is this normal?

I recently bought an old 40X chambered in 6x47 Rem. I know very little about Remington actions, and am wondering if the 'semi-circle C-type spring' in this bolt face is normal? It is held in by a pin that goes through to the outside of the bolt face. Looks like it has been somewhat hacked in there to me, much like the rest of the rifle unfortunately - see pick of wood screw holding the front of the trigger guard, and the bedding is in very poor condition.

The rim of the bolt counterbore is broken out for about 1/3 of the circumference. Honestly, it almost looks like an extractor for a standard boltface was fitted into a 222 bolt but I could be wrong. The riveted in extractor is the earlier version from the period between the 722 and the latest snap-in type. WH

Nope, not normal...Some home gunsmith took a
hand grinder to the bolt nose recess where the extractor groove is when installing a new extractor. Not knowing how to install it, ground the extractor cut recess almost completely out..destroying the extractor groove in tbe bolt recess. So you have nothing holding the extractor in place but the rivot and a tiny portion uncut with the hand grinder. Resulting in a very weak and exposed extractor, prone to breakage or pullout if hard extraction ever happened or a high pressure round would blow that extractor right in your face. The bolt is also ground down on the nose outside diameter by hand...unusual. Why was there interference with the receiver somewhere? This rifle needs the attention of a competent gunsmith to check it out... To see what you really have to work with or replace...Then ya have a some options for making it good, possibly, as it's no good now. Cut the bolt for a m16 or sako extractor. Or buy a new bolt from PT&G. Check chamber with a borescope and go & no go... the bolt face could be refaced, ...new barrel ? At this point you have no idea whats been done to this rifle, without a complete and thorough inspection of it...then decide on options to fix it.

Ive seen that damage before. Its from beating the bolt back and the handle solder held better than normal. Id get that whole rig checked out good. Trash that stock or spend some time getting that epoxy out of there. Check and make sure none of the rest of the action has been “trued” by the same dremel that trued that bolt

While I'm not a fan of converting the original Remington extractors, it this case it may be your best scenario. Before committing to that modification, I'd check these three things:

(1) The extraction camming surface at the rear of the receiver and how it fits with the corresponding angle on the root of the bolt handle. If that fit is good and you have a good amount of primary extraction, I'd go ahead with the extractor modification. If it's sketchy due to wear or has inadequate camming due to the lug abuttments and back of the lugs being trued...the bolt handle can be repositioned for maximum mechanical camming. This is...provided #2 and #3 checked out.

(2) Precise measurements of the bolt nose diameter and the diameter of the counterbore in the back of the barrel

(3) Precise measurements of the clearance between the front of the bolt nose and the rear of the counterbore in the barrel.

Yeah...the bedding is nasty and needs to be refreshed and likely repillared (if there's even pillars in there now). But that's nothing but a little time. You can easily inlet a threaded piece of aluminum for the front trigger guard hole and use a flat headed Allen cap screw in 10-24 to hold it in place, which is what I normally do.

Not being well versed in Remington bolts or lacking the tools, this is where a reputable gunsmith is worth the small amount of money you'll spend for him to make these measurements for you. There are some safety considerations here so keep that in mind. Just because it doesn't look all pretty doesn't mean it isn't safe or won't shoot, either.

Wow, worse than I had hoped to hear. I'll admit I bought the rifle in a very big hurry, gave it a very quick look over and not knowing what I was looking at I picked it up.
The previous owner bought it from an estate and I do believe, that he believed all the wonderful things he was telling me about it. I don't think he knew any better about it than I did. He was an old farmer who thought it may be fun to try out.

Sigh, now I'm left holding the bag with what I hoped would be a good first BR rifle. Time to save up for a smith I suppose. Darn.

Thanks for the advice.

It's really not all that horrible. There's nothing there that can't be addressed and fixed and the good news is that whatever you may need for parts is available. Plus, with the bolt done and the bedding freshened up, you'll know what you have. Getting with a qualified accuracy 'smith will move your project forward in good shape....lots of good ones on here that can help you out. If you post your location, that can be helpful in steering you to a good local accuracy 'smith, also.

I have a question about the cartridge. The 6x47 I am familiar with has a 308 head diameter. Your bolt is for the small 223 diameter head. Do you have any cartridges to fit the rifle?
