Bergara B14R Carbon - 60 5-shot groups

Put a few hundred rounds through a carbon fiber Bergara B14R today. I picked this up at South Dakota Arms in Miller, SD. Great outfit with great people. Give them a call if you are looking to get a Bergara rimfire. (605) 870-2008

This rifle is setup with Hawkins Precision hybrid rings, vortex diamondback FFP 6-24, and atlas PSR bipod. Rifle is totally factory. Had a few failure to eject, where the case extracted, but then stayed in the action and then prohibited bolt closure. Generally, the rifle is well built for the price point and ran well. It seems to be somewhat of a picky eater, and seems to throw some pretty wild flyers once in a while. Not uncommon for 3-4 shots to land touching each other, then one goes zinging off, doubling the group size. This particular sample REALLY liked a lot number of Lapua Polar Biathlon I have. I attribute the wild flyers to bullets being handled indelicately during magazine feeding, and it could very well be that the unique shape of the polar biathlon lends itself to feeding from this setup with more uniformity. I shot some more polar biathlon and it performed similarly, shooting in the .2's, .3's, and .4's. So clearly if a person does some lot testing, you'll likely run into a lot number that will shoot pretty good. The rifle is clearly capable of shooting well, despite the fact it is a lightweight carbon fiber setup and not a target rifle.

There was an attempt made to stick a TT Diamond and a Timney 517 in this rifle, though both were relatively loose fitting in the action. The action slot is a bit wide, and both triggers seemed to function well enough, but they felt very odd. The factory trigger is surprisingly good for a rifle at this price point. A bit weighty for some shooters, being on the 3lbs+ range, but very crisp and very shootable. This was nice to see.

Another random note; I was setting this up for youth shooters. I loosened up the screws in the recoil pad, removed all the spacers, and began tightening the screws back up. Before I was able to get the recoil pad tight with no spacers, the included screws would have popped right out the front of the stock, just behind the cheek piece. Luckily I realized what was happening and stopped before the screw actually made its way out. You'll need to source your own screws if you want to setup for little miniature type humans.

It certainly won't be taking the place of a TS Customs RimX build, and at 1/4 the price... I wouldn't expect it to either. If you're after a rimfire rifle with rem700 compatibility that will perform solidly around half-inch at 50yd, or slightly better with lot tested ammo, I'd say the Bergara deserves a look.

I am happy to see a well seasoned and experienced shooter do this evaluation... I am comfortable that the rifle had a fair test of its actual ability with the shooter that did the testing. Not a fan of the type of barrel used and feel that the barrel in this test could/probably is very easily the weakest component.

Groups look familiar to mine when it was first new, also carbon barrel. It now has about 1k through it a d groups are better. Interestingly enough, it wasn’t all that bad at 100. Buddy gave me some Norma TAC, I always figured it as blasting ammo. Wish I had bought some in years past now. It out shoot some Eley and Lapua I tried.

I see a lot more of orkan over on the Hide. For such a site where the emphasis has usually been CF PRS-type shooting, it's kind of amazing how much interest there is in the "All Things Rimfire" forum on the Hide. It was a fairly lively forum even before converted 40X & Vudoo repeaters hit the market, but it really livened-up after those & similar precision repeaters became available.

Where is orkan? Wish he could contribute more around here
I've changed the focus of how I contribute. I'm on our youtube channel, producing content for those that want to learn and advance. Some of it is available for free. Much of it is for paid members only. If you aren't a paid member, you might not even know the content exists.

I stay off forums mostly these days... specifically because of posts like shooterj2003. I'll post if the spirit moves me, but otherwise I won't. Had I not been prompted to come in here by a customer, I wouldn't have even known these posts exist. Always someone with something negative to say. (always) I don't feel like subjecting myself to that any more than I have to, and I don't have to. The dude has been registered since 2010, and one of his only TWO posts in 12 years time is ragging on me as he necro-posts in a 2 year old thread? No idea who he's talking at, but he's talking at me none the less. ...and don't look for me on "the hide" either. (lead sled? Seriously?)

@shootrj2003 here's me shooting off a bipod and rear bag, just as you see in the picture.

Here's some more of that horrible bipod and rear bag shooting... but this time at 600yds with a centerfire.

More bipod and rear bag at 600yds... except this time with 7mm norma mag improved recoil.

I can probably shoot well enough off a bipod and rear bag to properly eval the rifle in question.

Well i wish youd come around more often either way. Also get on rumble and check it out before the youtube commies ban you like they do everybody else in the gun world. Take care and hope to see you around

I played with one also, Hard to beat for the money. Shot eley tenex very well. All it needs is a trigger.

I'm new to posting this site. I've read many topics posted here over the years.
I'll get to the point. I'm considering a b14 and was trying to see different opinions on steel an cf. My tika t1x shoots very small groups with sk standard. I'm not a fan of testing groups with a bipod. Shooting my tika last Wednesday, first time using a bipod it didn't group as good and did have fliers. Same sk standard. I think the gun bounces different than using a machine rest. I have a KRG stock wondering around the west coast complement FedEx.
After shooting with a heavier stock I may just keep the tika

I use bi-pods almost 99.5% of the time. A good bi-pod, is as good as as any other type of rest. Its all in what you get used to. Now that being said, I did have trouble shooting the lightweight rifles (CZ452 MT) off a bi-pod, but I finally figured it out.

a good bipod and rear bag/rest is better than I ever thought they could be. I still prefer a good windage adjustable front rest if I'm shooting a rifle with a wide-flat forearm but I've using a Atlas & (more recently) a Rempel F-class on my sporters and some target rifles and shooting well with them

Here is a bipod design I came up with and machined myself with my CNC. It is very solid and micro adjustment for level and height. The ball feet screw off and that leaves sharp dig in points, but with a rubber mat, and the ball feet it stick very well. Think I'm going to start making and selling them. I used the ARCA rail setup so it is an easy on/off and adjustment. I won a 100 yard PRS match with a score of 487 out of 500 first time out with it. Was vary happy and way more stable then my Harris bipod or the Caldwell Rock tripod I was using.

Nice write up on the ammo. I too found the Polar Biathlon ammo worked well with my B14 Carbon Fiber barrel. Just bought another brick and hope it works as well.

Just installed a KI Precision profit barrel last night. Was getting late and only got to send 10 rounds down the pipe. No jams and feedings without issue. Going to sight in today.

To be totally honest, not happy. The only ammo it seems to like is Lapua X-ACT. Of course that is one of the most expensive ammo to buy. Second best ammo was Lapua Polar Biathlon, an older lot I had. I have a new lot that does not shoot well.

I told a friend to also try a barrel for his CZ, which he purchased. We put his together and I also made him one of my designed bipod's. Yesterday he won 8 rounds in a row and is super happy.

I'm going to clean mine again and maybe try some Eley Tenex. Also going to double check the head spacing.

If that doesn't work, I'm going to contact KI and ask them for suggestions.

Bottom line, my carbon filter factory barrel shot better and think I got a bad barrel.

Here's a suggestion. Keep in mind that it's not the brand or name on the box that any barrel "likes".

The fact is that barrels don't know what brand or variety of ammo is being used, least of all whether it's Lapua X-Act, Midas, or Center X. Except for the packaging, these three are indistinguishable from each other.

What rifles shoot well is good quality and consistent ammo, regardless of the name. Look for good lot of Center X. It's not necessary for you to spend X-Act money.
