First Time Making Bore Butter

Decided to try and make some bore butter for fun since I want to get more into black powder guns and cartridges.

I mixed some Paraffin wax, olive oil and a little bit of coconut oil. I had more oil than wax so my solution came out like lumpy mashed potatoes. Not the best, but useable.

I plan to try pan lubing in the future and will make some with a little more wax and bees wax so it’s more solid than liquid.

Does anyone know if I could possibly replicate Unique Case Lube? I like that stuff for lubing my cases.

I lubed some wads for fun too, I really like this hobby! I’m open to all suggestions for future projects and tips.

Seriously my advice when it comes to black powder is to make some friends that have been doing it forever.... It's unfortunately not like people are flocking to it these days.... There's some hardcore guys were I shoot and I just go down and watch sometimes.... It's really amazing to me how accurate they can be....

Thanks, I’m a younger guy and not many people my age are into this kind of thing. I’m 18, but trade gun stuff and learn from people who are 50+ most the time.

Equal parts beeswax, vegetable oil and rendered lard is the ticket. I put it in a mason jar which is in a pan of water, to heat it. Keeps your temperature right so you don't burn it.

Good idea, I was using the microwave, is a 50-50 mixture idea for bore butter or something harder like Unique Case Lube?

50-50 of which parts? Beeswax makes it firm, oil or lard softens it. As to the wads, I can't tell from the picture. I normally go by feel.

Yep 50-50 bees wax and oil? I don’t have any lard, but can probably get some at Walmart, I’ve heard it not a necessity though.

I have tried that mix before as bullet lube for bp cartridge loading. It worked , but did not keep the fouling soft, and was not as easy to clean. You lube for black powder use needs to keep the fouling soft. This lets you shoot more without stopping to clean, as well as making cleaning easier.

Gotcha, there are so many mixtures out there it’s hard to keep track lol, is it 50-50 by volume or weight?

I go by volume, melted. Like I said, I use 1/3 of each, beeswax( not parrafin), lard and veg oil. I stay away from petroleum products in my bp lube.( like parrafin)

The reason I stay away from parrafin or other petro products on bp, is that I use soap and water to clean my coal burners, and that doesn't clean up petro as well.

Crisco. Melt it in a pan, place patches in the melt in a concentric circle one partly covering the patch underneath and let the stuff harden.
Place the Crisco impregnated patches in an old Altoids tin and peal them off as needed.
I have been doing that for 40 + years and typically get 20 shots before swabbing the bore is needed.
You can also fry chicken with the stuff so there's that too.

Ok my turn.. one pound bees wax, two pounds beef tallow, 3-6 ounces of oil. I use Jojoba as it is the closest a person can get to Sperm oil which was originally used. Melt the wax in a crock pot which you can get at a thrift shop for under $10.. Mine was $5... Add the tallow and oil stir and our into a mould.. "Mould", meaning tupperware container.. or something.. More oil to the mix in winter less in summer...

I came here to say keep it non petro for cleaning purposes. You can use soap and hot water then. T/C bore butter is non petro and thats the point. Keep it au naturale
Yep I read that too, I didn’t know paraffin wax was made from petrol till I did some more research. I like the idea of soap and hot water, that’s how I clean corrosive salts.

Every BP shooter needs to learn to get away from anything petroleum based. Once you do it’s easier and faster than cleaning your 308.

personally I still haven’t blended, I use SPG.
