223 build possibilities

My wife did an order with Northland Shooters Supply and got everything she wanted from them. Shilen select match 223 Remington with 1:8 twist 26 inch barrel, KRG bravo stock and trigger tech trigger. Put it all together and this is what she looks like.

Looks pretty good to me.

I re-barreled a Win M70 Stealth with a 27" PacNor 4-groove, 1:7.5 tw varmint weight bbl that I chambered with a 223 Match reamer from PTG several years ago. It shoots some old JLK 90VLDs into 1 MOA at 600, but shoots better with JLK 80VLDs. I've used it to get a few new shooters some experience shooting steel at 600yds on my home range over the past few years, as I've got a trued M700 with PTG custom bolt and a 26" Bartlein sendero 1-7tw in 223AI for my own use. Got the McMillan A5 surplus from another rifle builder, and it's now wearing an Athlon 5-25x56 Midas TAC scope. Will have to look into taking the AI poly mags apart to allow for slightly longer COAL with Berger 90VLDs as the OP mentioned. My 223AI reamer cuts the perfect freebore for Berger 90VLDs seated to max mag length, but as the throat erodes, accuracy drops off unless I seat them longer and single-load.

Looks good! Was going try the 80.5’s myself but stumbled across a box of 60’s I forgot I had and they shot awesome!! I don’t need the great bc as 95% of my 223 will be 300 yards with the occasion 500 yard shoots.

That's fantastic! I'm looking to do one similar.

thanks guys, I think I’m going to do the 1:7 Bartlien in a sendero profile. Not sure what reamer my gun smith has.

I appreciate the input!
You should be happy with that.

Last year I put together a rifle with a 1:7.5 24" Krieger, built as a precision trainer/general target/varmint rig. I'm seeing groups in the .3-
.5" range with 55-77 grain loads.

Do you by any chance have a tightish neck?

My current 0.250" neck barrel shot about like that when the necks were 0.003" clear, but then I reduced the neck clearance to about 0.0005" and the groups shrank to about 0.180 ish.

I had to dig around to find brass with necks thick enough to get so little clearance with a 0.250 neck. Ended up using Lapua.

My next barrel will have a smaller neck and a tighter throat. Just waiting for Manson to ship, but it might be a while with the truckers blocking the bridge between Windsor and Detroit. Good for them though... standing up against the man.

I’ll have to measure a fired case next trip, not really sure I do remember using a .248 bushing though and that seems to be giving .002 neck tension.. can’t remember what my loaded round measures

I was think about neck turning, but my smallest bushing is a 247 and I don’t wanna buy any more bushings

If you use brass with thick necks (like Lapua) you could neck turn and remain larger than .247.

I'm not sure what more affordable brass would have necks as thick as Lapua.

I’m using exclusively Lapua brass and use a .248 bushing so I’m almost bottomed out only have .001 I could potentially turn off which is probably hard to achieve with my turning tool (rcbs)
