Rear Bag - Prone Shooting with Bipod

When I shoot from prone with a bipod, I typically use two bags, stacked on top of eachother to get the height that I need. The bottom bag is a small soft leather bag with ears, filled with sand. The top "bag" is a tube sock filled with used corn cob media and tied on the end. I use the sock as a squeeze bag for elevation. The setup is a bit wonky, and I'd like something more secure, stable, and a bit larger in size. I've watched alot of PRS guys on YouTube and I see alot of Gamechangers. What are your thoughts on them? I think traditionally they're used as a front bag, but have seen them used on the rear as well when prone.

Gamechangers are good bags. You can use them for both front and rear depending on the stage. I usually use them mostly up front though and use my own homemade rear bag of a sock filled with poly pellets.

Is there a reason you need two bags in the back? Is your front that high or is it something that your body can't get lower or are your bags just too small?

My current bags are pretty small, both being about fist-sized bags. The cheapo bipod I use also gets used hunting, and I think only collapses down to 7-9" or so.

Make yourself a bigger one to try. Get some poly pellets at an arts and craft store or walmart etc and fill the sock until it is big enough for you. I fill one sock and then sew the top and then slid it in another sock and sew and shoe goo the threads and put a piece of 550 cord on for a hanger. Works fine and costs about $5-10.

Shorter bipod is good if you don’t mind spending the money. I have two Harris for the reasons you described, the shortest one they make and the next taller one also. I use the shortest one prone and the taller one if sitting at a bench.

ELR is a bit different game. Bipods are different. I use a LRA, Phoenix, or Super Cal depending. With the heavier recoil, the rifle tends to twist more. A wider stance works well. I also like a heavier rear bag.

I've got a CAL with spike feet for my 25lb 300WM. I often think I should go super CAL so I don't break that smaller CAL. As far as rear bag I am thinking the heavier the better. I picked up a pint size game changer heavy to try out here soon. I hope. I've also been mindful to make sure the bag rider is not obstructed with a fold or pinch of the bag. (Green sock with poly beads to date)

Here's a question....instead of any kind of a rear bag, what does everyone think about the use of a rear monopod? It would offer quite a bit more stability I would think. The matches I plan to shoot this summer will be stationary for the most part, no moving around required and will be shot prone.

Monopods suck. Plain and simple. Use a good bag. You will be much more stable and be able to make small micro adjustments easily.

I have 3 sizes of the game changer and they all work. If I’m shooting steel from a stationary position with a Harris/Atlas I just use my protektor rear bag. I even thought about filling one with some lighter material to make it easier to carry.

I understand that but tangible skills learn thru in person instruction will serve you as a foundation to help build on that. All the discussion thoughts and experiences won't do you much good if you don't have the basics.

I came from the F-Class game to shooting steel at random distances in the National Forest for fun. I went with an Atlas bipod and a Schmedium rear bag filled with heavy sand. It took a while to adjust to this setup but now I am very comfortable with it. I did let a bit of sand out of the bag to make it more squeezable (?) and it is very adjustable and stable, once it settles and the NPA is established.

I bought a Large Gamechanger at a shoot and tried it on the Tank Trap stage then gave it to my shooting buddy to keep and we would share it at shoots I used it a couple of times after that, in the field and off the bench. I traded it to my shooting buddy for a new self timing MPA muzzle brake. He loves it, I liked it. I since have bought the set of Fortune Cookies, large and small. I use the small a lot. My favorite bag is like Rob's, I constantly go back to it. My shooting buddy made it for me in '08. Double socks with the poly beads, it's my favorite, and if a few of my other rifles that I use it on had bag riders it would probably be the only rear bag I use for bench or positional.
