6.8 Western

While at the range the other day, I found more once fired brass on the ground. Included was a tossed live round with a light primer strike. It was probably perceived as a "dud" round by the shooter. Rudimentary forensic analysis using my 10x loupe viewing the fired primers says this is the same gun and shooter that left a bunch of Winchester brass two weeks ago.

I believe there are only two factory rifles offered in this chamber. A Win. 70 variant and Browning, both bolt guns.

Does not give me a good feeling that a 5x5 bull could have been in the scope when the pin fell on that round. Lower right case.

All these new cartridges are just rifles twisted for long bullets - nothing new for those in the know, just offered by the factory.

The 6.8 is not much more than a 270 chambered long and twisted right. Yeah, yeah, short fat powder column, short action...whatever.

Not a fan of reinventing what already works.

I've got a new production Model 70 in .270 wsm that did the same thing on occasion. A heavier firing pin spring rectified it.

Judging from the lack of flatness and the generous outside radius on the primercup, that one in the lower right exhibited quite a bit less pressure than the others

Dud primer. Couple weeks ago, I accidentally ran about 10 primed 300wm cases in the wet tumbler for 3 hours or so. Looked just like that after I tried to fire them. In the current state of mag primer availability, I felt a noticeable pang of wasteful guilt.

Gotta admit, it does sell tho. Marketing and advertising is everything. Don't you love how in the ads the compare the 6.8 western to the .270, .270WSM, 6.5PRC, 6.5 RPM with lighter lower BC projectiles all factory while throwing the newest heaviest High BC 6.8 ammo in the mix. 140-150 grain bullets in the competitors ammo and 165-175 in the 6.8 Western. In reality, the 6.8 is actually a great option for non-reloaders. Any reloader or most will build a rifle to fit their needs. Faster barrel, heavier bullets and in any of the cartridges they advertise against the 6.8 western would equal if not exceed the performance of the 6.8. With the exception of the faster barrel, it's pretty much reinventing the wheel.
