Flying Squirrels

A friend up in East Texas has a bunch of Blue bird nesting boxes around his property. Flying squirrels have set up housekeeping in a bunch of them

A friend had one for a few years when we were kids. He would carry it around in his shirt pocket. never bit, was cute as hell.

Once they get in your house they can be difficult to remove. A shop vaccuun with a long hose can be very effective. Works well on bats too.

They are very fond of peanuts, but you have to put the peanuts out at sunset as other feeder visitors are also craving peanuts. If bears are in the area, probably not try to feed any critters.

To get rid of them, one local guy bought a boom box and put it in the attic. Played rap music at a high volume every day while they were gone to work. The furry critters left after about a week.

Had a large family of them living in a hollow white oak off the corner of my deck. Grey squirrels gave them a wide berth. I put a feeder up on my deck for these reclusive creatures, filled with shelled corn and sunflower seeds. They did no damage and were very interesting to watch. Though I have been known to be a ruthless killer of wildlife, I always let these alone.

Fortunately, bears are not an issue in a large city; Timing does let the daytime squirrels get only left overs. The only way to deal with the raccoons was to move the feeder to a semi-isolated tree, and wrap the base with metal. I thought the fencing mesh and wooden spokes would work; 'coons had other ideas.

I hired an exterminator company and $1600 later I was 'coon free (1st night, but he left the trap for a week or better), he would catch them and take them to a farm about 2 hours away and release them, he said what drew them to the attic was birds, he said the coons would catch the birds they pluck the feathers out of them before eating, he said females traveled alone and if it was male there would be 3 of them.

I'll have to put out some bait and start watching the cameras for the little flying guys.
Keeping the bait from the coons might be an issue though.
We have a BUNCH of them that come up to the porch every night. Go through about $40 a month in dog food. If we are late putting out the nightly feast there will be a little bandit face looking though the cat hole in the storm door. Watching mommie bring the babies for solid food is fun. Eat alongside a couple of possums. Peanuts and corn for squirrels in the day time, couple of bunnies at night.
Flying squirrels would be fun to watch.

When the coons came up onto the deck to eat the dog food he would let them settle in for a while and then he would let out a loud scream and turn on the light. He enjoyed seeing them react and scramble to leave the deck.

I suspect after about 4 'surprises' , the raccoons started ignoring him.
