One thing to be aware of is you can still suffer hearing damage very quickly wearing the best muffs and plugs money can buy if the concussion hits you in the face such as shooting thru a culvert in a prs match or some goofy tire tunnel at a range

some years ago I has purchased a pair of muffe battery operated by which they worked two ways. I'm sure you've seen them . They were quite amazing in that... when you made the proper adjustment, the hearing im,proved dramatically. I enjoyed that, ( along with another shooter with hearing loss). They were stolen out of my garage here at home along with some other stuff, including my cart, etc;. My question is... are they still available ? As I recall, they were very expensive.

That type technology has gotten way more affordable. Walker’s game ear muffs are the most popular now. You can get them at academy

I have noticed that... using ear plugs, I could almost always notice ear wax at the end of my ear plugs. I did not think this was appropriate but continued because the muffs would interfere with my shooting position. ( never thought about higher rings ... Never too old to learn gentlemen...

From research I have done on the industrial side of hearing protection, hearing damage can be instantaneous and permanent.

What Daddymac said is correct. I have a friend with serious hearing loss in one ear because some guy fired a pistol close to him (in an indoor range) before he had a chance to get his muffs on. One shot was all it took.

I still recommend muffs over plugs. I did my own unscientific test with a loud motorcycle motor running. I could hear the motor from 40 feet away with muffs alone. I had to move to about 25 feet to hear the motor when I had plugs under the muffs. I also notice a dramatic difference when, with NRR33 plugs in place, I put my motorcycle helmet on -- that definitely reduces noise levels noticeably (i.e. helmet over plugs vs. plugs alone).

I remember watching a NHRA telecast where they were stating that despite ear plugs and ear muffs together, the "concussive" force from the exhaust of a nitromethane powered car would still damage the ear. I always wear earplugs when I shoot but not with muffs. I shoot a vast majority of shot gun shells at trap though. No real big boomers.

Great article. Most foam plugs are made too small. Many cross the line into down right fraud.
3M-321-1251 are bigger and soft enough to fully conform your ear. Been doing plugs and muffs every time for a long time.

Nope. That would be the “CAEv2”.
312-1251 are stocked by no one. Have to special order them from the Acklands Grainger warehouse in Edmonton. They help more anything I’ve tried. I mow acres with a push mower. I live where it snows enough that a walk behind snowblower is actually a push snowblower. Hours at a crack for both. My snowmobiling is a varied 150 mile cross county loop that takes 4 hours.
312-1251 works.
I’ve been in multiple welding and manufacturing facilities with a foam ear plug dispenser on the wall that contains foam ear plugs that are loose as a goose in my ears. Management does like employees having to stop to wash their hands to roll up proper fam ear plugs. Small, shiny, just pop ‘em in is the preferred type. I suspect them poor bastards in the CALS got exactly that.
“CAEV2” is one more turd in sewage lagoon of fraudulent ear plugs.
