Talk me out of a Vudoo or Rimx

Anschutz has struggled with ejection issues on both the 54 and 64 actions for many years and the struggles and comments from shooters are well documented in the Anschutz forum on Rimfirecentral.
That's an broad generalization that may be misleading. Comments about ejection issues on RFC get attention only because they are exceptions. No one posts about problems they don't experience.

For an exception to this, I've had over twenty various Anschutz rifles, 64 and 54 actions, repeaters and single shots, and have yet to experience an ejection problem.

To the OP, guess you’re different from me. I did my research with both companies via phone. I’m sure they got sick of me. I ended up with a Voodoo and know I couldn’t be happier with my decision.

The people are what sold me on Vudoo for sure.

I have not experienced the ejection issues discussed on RC with my personal rifles, but it is common enough for that site to have a sticky with 79 posts with photos and video links for DIY repairs.

It is worthy enough to mention for anyone evaluating pros and cons associated with each make / model.

It’s a fair statement that those without problems don’t post, however those that do outline their problems have a common thread and their reports on customer support are at least worth consideration on rifles of that price point.

Was it a “broad stroke”? Maybe. But it’s not a secret or rarity either.

No, it's not a secret but it's not a common problem. But it's not enough to disqualify Anschutz as anyone's candidate for a good rifle. When this not-typical issue has been reported to ANA, for example, they've have been addressed by warranty.

My point is that for neither of us to ever personally experience it (and you said you don't know any competitor who has), suggests it's not likely so common that it should be a primary concern when thinking about a potential rifle purchase.

When there are threads about an issue with any rifle -- be it Anschutz, Vudoo, or other -- people experiencing it chime in. Reports of problems with Vudoo such as feeding issues appear on RFC and elsewhere. Nevertheless, these shouldn't be taken to mean that any such problems are necessarily widespread or should cause a shooter to avoid that rifle any more than they should avoid Anschutz.

I doubt Anschutz top models have more reliability issues than Vudoo.

I don’t have a Anschutz target rifle but do have a 1712 and can guarantee you it has ejection issues.

One of the guys I shoot with bought a Vudoo early this year and has tuned and ammo tested all summer. He shot it at our last 50 yard bench rest match and finished fourth behind a Annie and a pair of 52’s. I shot it after the match and it’s a nice rifle with very smooth action.

Unless I missed it, there is another plus for the RimX:

The magazine has a height adjustable catch ledge. This really helps to eliminate feeding issues for an “assembled” rifle. The presentation of a .22lr round, especially with its coated, soft lead bullet, into the CRF bolt and chamber is much more sensitive than on a centerfire. So when you hear about guys modding their feed lips on centerfires... yeah, you can’t do that on rimfire, so you need a correct presentation of the mag.

I shoot with a lot of guys with B14Rs and V22s that have had to do quite a bit of tuning to get the magazines to present correctly to the action. Typically they end up taking the thing to a really good smith, lots of trial/error, or sell them. If going with the V22, I’d buy a complete rifle direct from Vudoo or a retailer.

FWIW, I shoot a 457 MTR. For $1500 total (including scope, base, rings, rail, etc,) you can keep the all the micro-700 clones. I can buy a ton of quality rimfire ammo for the $2-3k extra. A mag change has never cost me a stage, and I’m not losing any accuracy to them. Now, if Tikka made a heavier barrel for the T1x as a factory option... never mind...

I have competed with Vudoo, RimX, CZ, and Bergara. I can tell you that any one of those is capable of winning. If I had to choose one I would chose the Vudoo. There are a good amount of pros and cons with each, but to be honest if you have the extra funds run a Vudoo.

Sweater Dood - I'd bet that the guys you've seen having issues with their V-22s feeding had all set their bbl'd actions up in one or another chassis - most likely ones that don't allow adjustment for mag height. Personally, there's not a chassis out there that I'd rather have than a conventional stock, and because of that, I've put a couple of 40X/XBs modified to use V-22 mags, and four V-22 repeater bbl'd actions into B&C, McMillan, and Manners stocks, none of which ever gave me any feeding issues. Based on all the online photos of 22RF rifles I see in a chassis instead of a conventional stock, I'm apparently in the minority, but that's OK, it's my money, and I have no desire to spend any of it on a chassis.

I agree with Flatlander on chassis systems. I was an early adopter with the RimX. I had a prototype I did some testing on. I liked the concept of being able to switch barrels out, The firing pin location, mag latch. I don't like the Extractor design. I think it's perfect for some situations, just not mine. Mine was in a McMillan A-5 and shot small with tested ammo. My buddy hated his Vudoo so we traded, his Vudoo never shot great in an MPA. Well the RimX doesn't either with my Ammo. His Vudoo in my A-5 shoots great! I know of another buddy who has a converted 40x that shot fantastic, switched to a chassis, no bueno.. I have a gen1 and a gen1. Vudoo now, both in stocks, both shoot great. Never had a failure to fire, never an extraction issue. That being said, I get beat on a regular basis by guys shooting chassis. I've tried em, they have their advantages, I just don't like them personally. And like Flatlander, all the issues I've seen at matches be it Vudoo, RimX, or 40x. Were in chassis. Absolutely love my Vudoos though.

Looking into a NRL22/PRS 22 build. After years of back and forth with factory actions in center fire, I've gone the custom action route and I will never look back. I feel like 22LR will go the same way. Plus I have extra 700SA stocks and Chassis for a 22lr with a 700 foot print.... Unless someone can convince me otherwise.
Well.....?

I’d recommend the Rimx but I wouldn’t recommend a prefit unless you know the details of how that barrel was chambered and timed. There is so much more to a winning 22lr barrel than most know
Same goes for the Vudoo. Great action but spend the time and money to have a barrel properly fitted. The little things make the difference!

Not sure if this has been mentioned. RimX is control round feed. You can not single load into the chamber.

That said I love mine for PRS/NRL style shooting. The adjustable height magazines are great for tuning feeding.

I have a PVA fast twist barrel on mine and it shoots great!
