New Marlin/Ruger Lever Gun

Growing up in Arizona we made fun of lever guns, especially Marlins. Naive. Found levers later in life and now I own a few. Marlin 336 waffle tops with Williams peeps in a 30-30, 35 Remington, I also have a Winchester model 71 and a Henry big boy in 45 colt. We have some areas around home where the cedars are thick and these rifles work great for close and quick.

This is great news, I’ve been thinking about picking up one of the older 1895s in 45-70, you could use stout loads or some trail boss (only have three pounds left and I haven’t seen any for sale since pre covid) and let the wife and kids shoot it.

Bolts will always be my favorite but levers are different and enjoyable. So are ruger #1s and Dakota model 10s. It’s fun to have some variety.

Thanks for the heads up Dusty!

Anyone want to discuss side load vs tube load? I have never been around a Henry rifle.

My Henry has both. If loading a whole tube it’s a little faster dropping them in the end, but it’s more convenient side loading if you’re just topping off with a couple of rounds.

One thing about loading through the side gate in a Henry or Marlin is that it will deform lead soft points.

That’s good to know, I didn’t think the Henry had the side gate.

I'd love it if they brought back the 1895 cb for a reasonable price. But that's only because Winchester won't make their 1886 a little more regularly and easily obtainable. I got really lucky when I found mine earlier this year on a local shop rack for a regular price

The 336 will soon follow in 35rem and 30-30. Happy to be the one to bring you the news here first. First shipment is on the dock right now so keep your eyes peeled. Im not a lever guy at all but it shoots like a bolt gun at 100 and finally comes with a recoil pad from the factory. Glad to see ruger stepping up and innovating.
I need a 336 in .35 Rem

Continue the model 60? With ruger building the 10/22 (a better gun in every conceivable way) WHY, GOD WHY build the marlin 60?
I'm not a model 60 fan but...tube mag, safety matches most common center-fire hunting autos, 10/22 known to often want work to match accuracy.. just off the top of my head.

Indeed. For therapy sessions (plinking) more ammo capacity is better. Tube magazines have their place. Yeah sure, a person can use one of those hideous banana clips (yes I said “clip”) with a 10/22 but they take too much time to load. When it’s time to ventilate empty beer cans gimme a tube magazine every time.

But in just about every other way the 10/22 is the superior gun.

I understand all of your points on the model 60.

I have had too many poor experiences trying to fix 60s that customers brought in. They are not fun.

I never understood the big loop and never saw the need to twirl cock a lever gun like Chuck Connors.
I think the additition of a Picatinny rail and threaded muzzle indicates they're betting on the Tactical mall ninja crowd. There's something wrong with showing up with one of these with a muzzle brake or silencer attached.
However, if they made one in 444 Marlin, it would be one to contemplate.
As I understand it, the big loop lever gun was an artifact of either the Wild West shows or the movies primarily for operating the gun with one hand while on trolling a horse with the other.
