Savage LRPV 6mm BR

what twist? congrats on your new rig. i just built one too. looking forward to developing loads . what are you starting with? i was lucky enough to have a ton of Varget and been stocking up on 105 Berger Hybrids. HOPEFULLY development will be easy. My matches here start in February

Nice setup...I'm running 2 Savages in 6mm Norma Dasher, and other than the search for brass, which I solved, I love them. Have looked into going the full custom route, but at approximately 5-8k, I have to stick with more affordable options... I am considering chambering a 6br barrel for it, just for brass consideration's, but it shoots good enough now, and I have a new Krieger bbl chambered in the closet so.......I'm using a Jard trigger (7-12 oz) and really like it....it replaced the blade trigger cause I was tripping the blade almost every shot...other factory trigger is great. Anyway, please post your build, testing and accuracy as you go...rsbhunter

Buzz,
The LRPV comes with a 26 inch 8-twist.
I found two boxes of Berger 108 GR and bought a box of Hornady 103 ELD just to try.
Reading on this sight the 8 twist seems to like these weight bullets.
I have a full pound of IMR 4895 and a good bit of 748.
The 748 seems to be used with th elighter bullets mostly.
I and everone else is looking for Varget.
rsb,
I don't know how the accu trigger is going to go for me.
I have one on a rimfire Savage with a Boyd AT-ONE stock and it is adjusted below a half pound
using a spring cut from a 1911 firing pin spring.
Cocking it is tricky.

The factory target triggers are actually a decent trigger, except for the "blade". It's not a major problem, but in a timed match, having to recock 3or4 times is disconcerting, at the least. That said, you can get to 7-10 oz pretty easy and still have reliability. If I could shim the sides of the blade, and get rid of tripping it, I would have kept the factory. But I love the Savages, for what they are....rsbhunter

rjtfroggy, I did not know that! Thanks for the heads up...there's another guy that shoots the same gun, and has the same problem, just less frequency. Will have to get the factory and do some "smithing". Thanks, rsbhunter

Yes, the Savage target triggers are really a decent trigger, maybe not a Jewell or Bix & Andy, but for a factory trigger, really good. The one on my 12 HS stocked Savage is so light that by the time my finger feels the trigger, it's gone bang. And it's bounce safe....rsbhunter

Try 68 gr Berger bullet. Absolutely awesome in mine at 100 yds. 108s are great too

KD,
I will try the 68's and i'm sure some others too.
The trigger is the target version and the one on my rimfire is not so i'm hoping for a
better result. It feels great dry firing but th eproof will be at the range.
The last bit of gear to come in is my bushing for th eRedding type S dies.
I calculated I will need a .266 with the Lapua brass that I got.

Really the only real issue with factory Savage triggers is that wonky sear. The design involves some weird twisting forces cocking it and that long lever holding it. They get the job done and work pretty good. I have a few that have the blades removed for better feel.

If the firing pin drops when you close the bolt, by removing the blade it will go bang. add a little bit of spring tension until the pin does not drop. I watched someone that removed the blade and made his trigger safe, make his gun do the "bang" thing when he close the bolt

I don't remove remove the blade I just shim it back out of the way. I have small hand and can't reach the center of trigger and get false firing. I never load my rifle without the barrel being down range l as by doing this there's a possibility of a slam fire but I close the bolt really easy and I can get the triggers under 3oz and they work really well for me. I AM NOT RECOMMENDING ANYONE DO THIS !!! I TAKE NO LIBILTY FOR THIS INFORMATION !! FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTION IN THE ONERS MANUAL.

The pull won't register on my gagethat starts at 8OZ.
The rifle seems to cock ever time the bolt closes, so I will start here.
I SHOULD be going to the range this afternoon to sight in the scope and find the shoulder.
I will report back the results ( hopefully with pics of groups )
The forum members have been a big help getting moving down this road!!

Well, good news bad news on the first firing of my new Savage.
Good news first.
The Sightron is all that I hoped it would be. 50X at 100 yards is a big help and I found it easy to work with.
Thanks to Lance for his help and advice.
It was cloudy this afternoon here in MASS with gusting winds so I had doubts about getting an outstanding result group wise. I just picked a safe load of 28 GR IMR 4895 with a 108 Berger and Fed match primer.
.020 jump again to be safe.
I took me five rounds to get into the 1 inch dot sticker at 100 yards.
I was able to get three rounds into the lower right quadrant in a tight cluster. All touching.
I personaly do not place much value in three shot groups for bragging rights.
It's five rounds that counts.
Then the bad news,
The darned accutrigger stopped cocking!
Naturaly I didn't bring the 3/16 allen or the little Savage supplied tool to adjust the trigger so my shooting for today was over.
I love the recoil ( or lack there of ) In the rifle and 6mm BR. I was using free recoil with no problem.
I am unsure if I can get to the range tomorrow but can't wait to get some rounds through the rifle and start working on getting as much out of this package as I can.
Thanks again to all for the advise and tips!

Well, the best news is it seems to shoot incredibly !!!! Seems you've learned the same way I did about putting together a "range bag". I carry all the tools to tighten scope mount screws, action screws, trigger adjustment, etc. With fuel being the price it is, and time involved.....but congratulations.... Seems like it is going to be a super accurate rifle...rsbhunter
