I'll put in my 2 cents worth. I think there is way too much focus on book numbers than real like field experience.

All the convential big game cartridges work quite well IF you use the correct bullet, shot placement and have the necessary hunting skills then shoot within a range that matches your field marksmanship capability.

Naturally some cartridges are more suited for the large bears than others and that must be taken into account. But if we're speaking about deer size and related game animals then my answer is:

Why a 25-06 - Why not!

He’s coming into town for Thanksgiving. I’m going to let him shoot some of my guns to see how he handles the different cartridges. Most of the guns have Remington Varmint profiles or heavier. Most have custom stocks, including the new Swede.

Tell him to build a 30-30 Winchester, taken more deer than any cartridge on earth... It will give him plenty of room to master his wind reading skills and build field experience. It's all about proper shot placement.

I've been shooting a 25-06 (pre-war M-70) before Rem. 'made it legal'. I've killed dead deer, antelope, gophers, sage rats and prairie dogs. Bullet selection has always been poor compared to some of the other calibers, BUT, I've never had a need for anything else in the .244 to .264 range. I have smaller calibers for the small critters when the wind quits. The real deal is get a caliber in a rifle you like, then shoot it, shoot it, shoot it!!

I think I found another option to try. I dug through my safe and found a lightly used 6.5-284 with a Remington action and a single shot sled in it. A new “hunter stock and some bottom metal might make a good hunting rig.

I’ll build the gun and load for it. It’s the “If I get to Montana and forgot my ammo, what do I do?” question I have to deal with.

Try the 6.5 Creed,.. I really LIKE, mine !
Does what, the 6.5 x 47 does and Factory Ammo,.. IS, .. available !
And the 6.5 Creed is, "Easier" on Barrels than, the .25-06 is !
Use, a 140 Elite Hunter or, 156 grain Berger Bullet for Elk at,.. UNDER, 500- 550 Yards, tho !
SKIP, the .243 Win.,.. IF, Elk are on the Menu !

Who can make a good 7.5 twist barrel for 25-06

Krieger made a 7 inch twist 25 caliber for me. They charged me an extra $75 for the twist. I'm guessing they would also make one with a 7.5 inch twist.
