Which Laser RangeFinder for Son-In-Law

I don't have either of those models but I have a Bushnell that's about 10ys old that does deer to 800 to1000 yds depending on the light. I am happy with it. What ever they say max range is it will be only 50 to 60 percent of that on a deer usually. Sometimes it will read off terrain better than an animal. Now if you want to limit how far he shoots buy one that will only read a deer that far.

Get a Sig. They have lots of options at a number of price points. Everyone I have used has been spot on ranging known distances.

Great to hear you've got that level of confidence with them but I'll respectfully ask how you are certain the readings are correct? Are they targets at rifle ranges you're "ranging"?

I would only recommend a Leica for any range finding duty, but especially for long range on small targets. It has the finest target size, 18" at 1000 yards, compared to the 72" average size for the rest! The less your target fills the rangfinders reading size the less reliable it will be. Not to mention the first to offer one to the public and the readout is led illuminated for use even in the dark, and with it's industry leading glass, and 7x it is capable in the lowest of light!

i would be all over this if i did not own one!

I have owned a bunch and will never get anything but Bino/LRF combos. The Vortex Fury 5000 is about the best "bang for the buck" I have ever seen. If you spend more, you get better glass, but that laser is pretty amazing for the price.

The Leica product is great. If very generous budget AND he is the greatest guy - get the Leica range-finding binoculars. That said - the range finders by most manufacturers made today are twice as good as what we had ten years ago.

I just bought a SIG for the wife. Aint here yet so can't comment. But the revews said the SIG has a fast updated processor. Me? I use a pair of Leica Range finding bino's. No complaints here.

Vortex warranty is great. I wouldn’t think either of these rangefinders would be what your wanting for over 500 yard work. I have the vortex razor 4000 and it’s a great unit. They also have a 1800 that might be a in between.
Getting ready for 2022 Black Friday specials, I just field tested the Vortex Ranger 1800 and the Vortex Razor 4000. We sighted in on a white marble church steeple about a mile west of the Sportsman's Warehouse. The Vortex Razor 4000 effortlessly and repeatedly registered 1721 yards♥, but the Vortex Ranger 1800 could not detect it.

The 4000 does do what you need it to. If you haven’t purchased one yet, I would also consider the Fury range finding binoculars.
