Shortening AR barrel

In Missouri our "muzzle loader" deer season was changed to "alternative weapon" a few years ago and any centerfire handgun is legal. I got my wife an AR 6.5 Grendel with a 12.5" barrel. They have updated the regulations describing a legal weapon for that season that now includes an overall length limit and the gun is 1/2" too long. I am considering cutting the barrel and getting a brownell facing/chamfer tool and doing it myself. I have never done this before so I just have to ask if I have a reasonable chance of success or if I am about to waste $150?

For $150 you could probably buy a shorter barrel and sell your existing one to recoup some of the money?

I'd be looking at shortening the rifle, rather than the barrel...should be an easier way to pick up 1/2" of length instead of cutting the barrel. This is for minimum length pistols, but perhaps there's a way to adapt a buttstock to it?

In my experience, Bear Creek Aresenal's barrels are between 1/2 to 1.5 MOA - depending on luck of the draw. But, even 1.5 MOA would be OK for a hunting rifle, yes?
They are currently showing 1 at 11.5" for ~ $100.

That said, shortening the stock might be a better and easier option.
