Bartlein carbon barrel shortening.

Has anyone cut a Bartlein carbon barrel back shorter than the intended produced length? As in remove the full sized portion at the front and cut it back into the carbon wrapped area. If so what was the barrel core diameter? I’m about to risk chopping one and thought I’d ask to see if anyone else has done it. My plan is to thread the core and add a threaded bushing as the new shoulder. I’ve seen references to people doing this on other brands and figured since Bartlein’s have a larger core with less carbon wrap than others I just might be okay. Pretty spendy experiment if it didn’t work out though :)

A few years back I saw a post, I believe it was on Long Range Hunting forum where a guy did that just like you are proposing, I think it turned out ok. I think the part that would worry me is the carbon fiber splintering?

Do you know the core diameter, and what your barrel wall thickness will be after you thread it?

I’ve never done it with a bartlein,
I have some local carbon wrapped barrels I cut down all the time, just did a 16” 7 Saum the other day. On this brand the smaller calibers .264 and below were around a .5” barrel under the carbon, and the larger calibers were close to .625”
Just like you stated, I thread the end about .875 and epoxy or red lock tite a bushing on to shoulder against the carbon and set back up for muzzle threads.
Use a vacuum right next to the carbon fiber when turning it off, it’s nasty stuff makes your arms itch and you certainly don’t want to breathe it.

I did see a writeup once of somebody doing exactly as you describe
He threaded his device straight butted up to the carbon fiber with no issues
its pretty tough stuff, and I believe it was a Proof barrel
If it were me I would at least use a thin flat washer against the carbon though

Likely Ultimate Reloader. He did a Proof I believe. He did add a steel bushing in front of the carbon though if I recall correctly.

Perfect. That's exactly my plan. I've done this very thing on skinny steel barrels adding a bushing to bring them up to a .725-.750" shoulder for 5/8-24 thread for supressor use. Since Bartlein has said they use a larger diameter core (the weight bears this out compared to others) I'll probably just go for it. It was purchased for a pre-supressor project but now the plan is for suppressed length.

I bet that sounds like a canon
Customer was going short barrel to run suppressed all the time, shot at my range and it was okay. However little more smoke was coming out of the suppressor after firing then normal.

Good luck man, let us know how it goes
