300 blackout bullets selection

Bought the wife a Howa mini 300blk to use this deer season. Having a hard time finding reliable expanding bullets.
My question, Does anyone use a 300 blackout for medium to large sized game? If so what’s your go to bullets and velocity numbers? Thanks!

110 Hornady V Max, 125 gr Speer TNT. Haven’t used them on anything but accurate out of the Blackout and what I will use for deer. My buddy uses the Barnes VOR-TX and says they really tear up deer.
I run H110 for powder and W296 .

I have some 110 amax’s but was concerned by penetration being it’s rapid expanding.

I have cfe blk, h110, and shooters world blackout on hand.

I’ve been told that you can use varmint style bullets and they will expand like a regular cup and core bullet. The reason is the velocity is lower and they will expand like a cup and core bullet instead of blowing up. Don’t know about this as all I‘ve shot is paper. I went to a 6.5 Grendel and the Blackout has been in the safe ever since. The Speer 125gr TNT with H110 is what shot really good but the Hornady 110 gr V Max shot good too.

I was told something very similar by my smith. My 300BLK is a DD AR pistol and I just bought a couple hundred rounds of the Hornady 110 Vmax ammo today.

I have been using my 300BO for Pigs. Any bullet will do the job if its a head shot. It is the shoulder shots and other weird quartering shots that separate out the best bullets.

My experience is that the Barnes 110gr TAC-TX (16" barrel: 2,200fps) is the best performer (head shots or body shots) by dumping a massive amount of energy. I thought I knew what hydrostatic shock was.... it'll open your eyes! I like lighter bullets doing higher velocity.

Another option is the 150gr Speers Gold Dot. Dellet is a big proponent of this bullet, and he could write the book on 300BO.

I have used the Speer 125gr TNT (16" barrel: 2,100fps), which is a great all-around bullet at a great price, but it isn't designed to mushroom/expand. If you make a well placed shot it will kill, but I don't have same level of confidence. I have made good hits that would have been instant kills with Barnes TAC-Tx, but required a follow-up shot to finish the job with TNT's.

A 110gr VMax works, but it becomes more iffy on shoulder shots. It will kill them, but may run off and die elsewhere.

My favorite is the 125 Nosler BT, but would keep my shots to around 100 yards. I think of the 300 Blackout as a modern 30-30.

Took a few deer with the factory Branes 110gr Tac-TSX when I had a blackout. The bullet works very well at moderate velocities as it was designed with more expansion in mind. If I were doing it again and reloading I'd use the barnes 110 or 120gr, nothing else for hunting.

The one Illinois deer I shot with a 300BO was with a 125BT. It mushroomed perfectly. Shot was about 65 yards. If you're looking at supersonic then the 110 barnes tac-tx has a great reputation. If you're looking at subsonic I'd look at maker bullets.

I am going to be suppressed but I’m not going to go subs on deer, from what I’ve read there’s to much unreliable expansion.

There seems to be a trend going here! Looks like I’m going to have to find some 110 Barnes. Thanks guys, hopefully she can put one in the dirt.

I have shot a few deer with the Barnes 110 tac-tx and what I observed I’m switching to the 110v-max. It only left a small exit hole and no blood trail. Both deer where shot broadside behind the shoulder and both ran 50yards or so. I have used the 125sst in the past with great results (lots of blood maybe ran 20y). I’m going to give the v-max a try and see what it does. One thing we have a early anterless season that’s unlimited so we get to shoot a good many deer or we used to before the hunter for the hungry program so taking deer.

Cavity Back Bullets has a bullet designed for the blackout. Impressive expansion down to 1200fps and below. I told a friend about them and he loaded them for his kids rifles. I think they’ve harvested 3 or 4 deer with them so far and he says they work awesome.

Sierra makes a very cool 130 grain bullet with a funky hollow point. I use it running slooow in a 308 and it is very accurate. Coyote and groundhog splatter

Good, thank you. I would be VERY hesitant to attempt a killing shot on Elk personally. I'm sure there is someone out there who will disagree but it's my opinion after all. Archers do it all the time but at much closer ranges.;):)
