rechambering a .243 barrel lathe question, gunsmiths

hi
I have chambered 2 barrels on my lathe, but never rechambered a existing chamber.
So for the gunsmiths can you give me the highlights, such as do you just cut off a certain amount of barrel, treating like a new blank, rechamber or just move machine the shoulder forward ,face off the rear of the barrel, re head space, reaming forward ,and if there was a relief cut on the threads go with the remaining threads?
Thx for the help!!

Depends on why you are rechambering the barrel. Longer fatter cartridge just ream it. Shorter smaller cartridge cut off whats needed and remachine. If the barrel is shot out and you think you can get more life by reaming it a little deeper good luck. I never found the result was worth the work involved.

Thx I am not sure what I need to do yet, its a .243 win and it shooting terrible the throat my be gone or damaged ,bore scoping friday morning to see if there anything to be seen,
I am planning ahead since I have all the tools needed, it would just be my time wasted, it is a 32 inch barrel ,so that is in my favor.
Thx again!

Have you bore scoped it to look at the lead and erosion? That will tell you a lot about how much set back it needs or if it's even worth it.

Your 32" barrel has some potential for either process but it depends on your barrel tenon length not the threaded length or the entire barrel length. This also will depend on the number shots already fired, the rapidity of the shots being fired and the cleaning process you employ.

Another consideration is the amount of carbon which is existing in your barrel. Cutting through carbon can ruin a good reamer which is the reason many gunsmiths hesitate to recut an existing chamber.

hi
bore scoping completed.
The only thing found is 20 inchs from the chamber end there is allot of pitting on the lands and in between.
Is this a normal .243 win dying indication? there was no copper in the pitting, my friend with the bore scope thinks it was in the barrel from the start. so think this is the problem?
thx!

Corrosion from cleaning chemicals not nutralized. Oil the bore after dry patching to prevent it. Chuck the barrel and get a new one.

That pitting should not make it shoot badly. It would make it copper foul . The pics make even a fiber or hair look massive . If the throat is good and the muzzle is square and sharp , go ahead and rechamber . If nothing else ,its a learning experience.

If it is 20 inches beyond the chamber, get a new barrel, if it shooting so bad.
If it is 2 inches beyond the chamber, cut some off the butt end and rechamber. Then see if it made a difference in the grouping/shooting you want, out of it.

You have your own lathe so rechamber it and see if it shoot after that otherwise dump the barrel and get a new one. Id cut off the threads and start fresh from there, should clean up the chamber
