Are you sure that you dont have a sticking indicator.What you are describing sounds just like the indicator is binding due to old coolant or grease that got in the barrel of the indicator itself.Try the indicator with your finger.If you move it ,does it spring right back into position.If it is lazy it is time to send it to starett for a good cleaning etc.

Used a long reach indicator in the neck area and dialed the barrel in with no problems. Thanks for all the suggestions - I really appreciate them.
