PRS Chassis - Budget Build

I'm building an entry level PRS rifle in .22-250 off a Savage 12 SA that I have on hand. Not looking to spend $1,000 at this time on a stock or chassis, but would like to upgrade a fair bit from the factory stock I'm working with. I've got a heavy palma Criterion ordered with a 20 week lead time.

I'd like to try a chassis if possible. What are some options that you've seen or used that you would qualify as entry-level equipment? I know of the Oryx already, but think there may be others out there.

I'm starting to become a big fan of the XLR elements.

I ignored them for so long because I don't like their aesthetics.

But they are almost as adjustable as anything out there. Stock fitment is a huge deal. You probably know this already.

I like the element because it's lightweight it can be used for hunting or a NRL hunter or competition dynamics field match but you can also buy all the internal and external weight kits to settle it down and balance it out for PRS matches. Very versatile and adjustable.

I just got an XLR Envy JV Pro in and I was doing a lot of tripod practice at 550 yards and noticed I just seemed to be shooting the XLR a small amount better than the MPA Matrix and Foundation Centurion I had out there at the same time.

I have a soft spot for Savage rifles - and own a couple. Unfortunately, the choices for chassis are limited. The XLR Element may push your budget, but is good. An alternative to the Oryx, which I sold on quickly - not due to it's functionality, but ergonomics (Im a prone shooter primarily) is the MDT XRS. Similar construction to the Oryx, but far better, albeit a little more expensive.
Talking of Savage - what's happened to the "Impulse" straight pull?

Before you start spending money upgrading your rifle, I think you should sell the Savage.

Either buy a used Remington 700 or save up for a Tikka.

If you get a Remington, and buy a chassis or stock that doesn't fit you, the chassis or stock will be very easy to sell. You will be doing yourself a huge favor by not dumping money into a Savage.

Great post. Wish I would have had this advice before I bought my first “precision” rifle.

Getting back on track here. I would try a Oryx Chassis, but I'm not in love with the options for it. Also I'm with Rob1, why 22-250?

Edit: I just seen where Oryx has an Arca rail available. I like that option. Does someone make a bag rider for it? These are two options I like.

Do you reload?

If you do, maybe take a look at the 6mm chamberings.

Talk to your gunsmith about how they like to chamber their barrels. These days I try to avoid "tight chambers". Sometimes standard dies won't be able to fully resize brass out of those chambers. This way you don't have to spend more money on a custom die.

.22-250 because I’ve already got the brass, dies, and silencer for it, and really want to run a can on it, as this will be my coyote rifle and occasional comp. rifle. Sure is easy to spend other people’s money, isn’t it? Haha! I think I’ll be trying out the MDT LSS-XL Gen 2 in a couple months. Thanks everyone!

If you’re planning on shooting matches with it, the 22-250 is not likely to feed well with a full AICS style mag. The cases are too tapered. You could go .22 Creedmoor and still use your 22-250 brass. Should fireform fine, if properly annealed.

The MDT XRS is available for Savage SA RH actions and is an excellent choice and very budget friendly.
I like the XRS so much i replaced an MDT ACC and MPA BA Comp with them.
