preferred gun cases

Here's a great soft case for longer barrels:

Problem comes with wide fore end rifles. Nothing out there for 4", 5", 6", or wider rifles. Also, nothing out there for heavy gun, 1000 yard rifles.
Custom, homemade boxes or shelves are the only way to transport the big boys.

Last couple of rifles I had were trundled back and forth to the range in a decent soft-sided bag.

Current rifle case: I use the Pelican Vault V770. Heavy, yes, but I know the rifle and scope will be unaffected. Also has the ability to get locked up and survive the beating of commercial airliner flight.

Would much prefer a $150 case get scratched up and my shoulder muscles "pumped" a bit than the rifle+scope get damaged.

I use a DU-HA 4 gunbox on PD hunts carries 4 scoped rifles nicely. I put a little
Foam between just for extra protection.

Battle Lake Outdoors deluxe predator case is about all I use any more. Much better protection than any soft case that I've seen yet easier to pack than a good hard case like SKB,etc. They have gone up a bit in price since I bought them but they are worth it.

Depends on context. I do soft cases when I can, but if it's going in the back of the truck then everything remotely fragile and small enough goes in a rather boxy Pelican Air case (handguns, electro-optics, etc) and rifles go in the bigger Pelican Vault. I took out the bulk of the foam, so soft cases like my Eagle dragbag go straight into it.

I prefer the old school Pelican/Hardigg rifle cases but EXPENSIVE, and none of the surplus stores with them for $85 are nearby, all charge like $300 shipping so I did the Vault when I got a deal. Been using it pretty regularly, and entirely happy with it, even has the pushbutton latches so easy to open and close.

champions choice does have airglides for $58. i spoke with them last week about shipping, which unfortunately was quoted at $34 each to go 115 miles mid-TN to no-AL. insane. i could bop up and retrieve in person, then there would be the issue of TN sales tax.

SKB makes a really good hard case, that isn't too heavy or horribly expensive. I prefer the weather proof seal over some other models.

Still good to know, Thanks! Maybe the airglides are being produced again?

which do you guys prefer a soft or hard gun case primarily for trips to the range ?
The Plano AirGlide scoped clamshell type hard case 130102. Have 4, have used 2 for over 20 years and have only had to replace the foam inserts. When I called Plano I told them I had 4 cases and they shipped me the foam inserts FREE including shipping. They would not take any $$. Great company!

These aren't airline shippable tough, but tough enough to stand up for over 20 years in the back of a pickup.

Did the same thing, myself. Awaited a great deal on the Vault case, at a nearby LGS. They had them for sub-$120, with tax, though I had to drive ~90mi round-trip to get it. A heavily-built brute of a box, but it works well. Not quite their "top" end, old-school grade, but a fairly decent case.

I ordered a couple of the airglides from Amazon and it was a Chinese company and they never came and they reimbursed my money............thankfully!

I finished reading all comments and just don’t understand I guess, I’m almost 60 years old I have a pelican case for each rifle, I don’t know exactly but I have to be 60lbs over weight and I can easily and I mean easily pack a pelican in each hand up the stairs to the line with no issues at all. Each case has my rifle, scope, heat shield and dedicated cleaning rod and bore guide in it. There’s too many thousands of dollars in each case for me to trust to just about anything but a pelican. I have 6 for competition rifles and two for Hunting rifles.

Eric and @Alex Wheeler

I have SKB cases for my rifles with the Wheeler LRB stocks and they are great cases but sometimes room can be an issue. Before nationals, I purchased two of these in the 51" length. My 4" wide rifles measure 49" and 50" long and fit fine in these. I bet they would work with at least 5" and possibly 6" wide rifles. Both rifles took up less space than one in a hard case would have, and these cases are American made!
