Retirement

Make sure you're old enough to get FULL Social Security when you retire. You paid into it for how many years? It's YOURS.
Retire any earlier than FULL retirement age and they ding you for every $1.00 you make while still working. Cuts down on what you get in SS that YOU PAID INTO!!
Tried to get the wife to sign both of us up but they jerked her around. :( Called SS and wanted an appointment. Phone? Hell no, in person. Walked in, they called my name and the Gal said Mike? I had been working on her car for the last few years, Took her about 10 minutes, wam bam we were out of there, retroactive to about 3 previous months. I lost about $2.00 per month. DONE DEAL!!
Retired at 65 and 10 months (??) or somewhere around that, got a full check and kept working. Stashed my SS and pay check. Wasn't getting medical ins. taken out of my pay very week. Surprised at how much $$$ I was making. :cool: The boss lady said she cried every time she wrote my check because of how much she took out for Med. Ins.
Worked for maybe another year and a half then had a couple of medical issues.
Thought "someone is trying to tell me something" so I never went back.
Boss called and said he wanted to go on vacation and he wanted me to hold down the counter till he got back. Got paid CASH and got to see a lot of customers that I hadn't seen in a long time. Boss shows on Monday morning, I show him what I did all week while he was gone, told him See Ya, I'am going home to get breakfast.
Still got about $75K in tools locked up at the and every time I stop by, "Sure wish you would come back. I need you." Not gunna happen. Got too many things keeping me busy, even if it's just checking out the insides of mu eyelids.
Got enough $$$ to keep me happy, pay for my Rolls Royce and 3 Cadillacs and support my habits. Me and the wife of 57 years (today) like to eat.;)
Don't work till you drop on the job. Not enough $$$ in it.
Get out and enjoy the rest of your life. You've earned it. Every bit of it. :D

I GOT retired twice, by the same company. They let me go the first time and 3 months later put me back on the payroll with a remote job, which I negotiatied into a 3 day work week with full benefits and all my vacation and 401K reinstated since they had moved the manufacturing plant out of state. Asked me to do a project for them that I did, and then they never implemented it. Retired me the second time 3-1/2 years later. I'm enjoying it. My wife is the only person I have to please and she's the least demanding person I've had in my adult life. I'm never out all manner of projects to do for us or friends of ours. Now where did I leave my single malt?

If you are thinking of retirement you only need two things. A good TV, A good wife and they both have to work. ;) Seriously to need to plan ahead on what you will do with the extra hours every week. If you have a hobby other than shooting expand on it. I am a retired Millwright which means over the years I learned pipefitting, electrical, carpentry etc. from the guys in our department. I had a two page long list of home improvements and honey dos when I retired. I have been retired 20 years now so the list is pretty short. I have one friend that invested in a mill and lathe and rebuilds old tractors. Another was a machinist and now is a gunsmith. The list goes on and on.
 
Worked on Locomotive, and Box Cars for 40 years and 1 month, took my required vacation days with pay, and was sick only 2 days without pay during entire time. Made my monthly gross salary sometimes in 2 weeks time, missing a lot of Christmas, Thanksgiving, and other holidays, because the younger employees didn’t want to work. Was furloughed on my last job would think being number 2 on the top of roster out of 600 foreman you would be safe!! Well NO not really, I could not go back to my craft because they were
Exhausted, or furloughed also. So only option was to retire, and that happened on April 1 2020. Being so work related and didn’t want to stay home and get fat, I work for a farmer close by and enjoy every minute of it. Wife has 3 years left before she can retire and pull what I have invested
In her retirement funds. Just turned 61 myself last February.

Wow, all through the ‘70’s and ‘80’s we worked on those big anchor handling tugs on a regular basis. Companies like, Jackson Marine, Newpark, Zapata, Gulf Fleet, etc docked them at several Shipyards in the Houston area.

I haven’t seen one in a long time. The advent of offshore rigs with the GPS controlled thrusters has put many out of work. There are still large supply boats, but the rarely drydock in our area.Louisiana has that market cornered.

Heck, I might have machined some of theProp Shafts in one of the boats you captained.
 
I've been with a company for 33+ years now. They took our pensions 2+ decades ago, but I've been trying to build up the 'ol 401(k) since then - just concerned about how much tax is going to come out of this once we stop paying in and start pulling it back out. How much is enough to retire??? I'm 55 now and have enjoyed the journey I have to say. The kids are pretty well set now, and I'm looking forward to doing more traveling - and picking up some more, nicer quality guns over time. :) After having about 5 different jobs within company, well... this one is definitely getting old, no question. But a lot of it - for me anyway - is about the people I work with, so I'd like to finish it up strong with them. A couple of them think 2025 is 'it', but none of us ever know because it's less about past performance these days, or even future potential, but rather - being in the right place, or wrong place, at the wrong time. Sad. We've already lost soooooo many good ones. Anyway, I have no doubt I will enjoy retirement if the good Lord has one in mind for me, and if not - well, no regrets. All the fret and worry is gone now. Not rich (not even close!), but feel richly blessed. Those of you already there, ENJOY IT! Life's fragile and it can change on you very fast, we've all seen that.
 
I retired March 25’th this year after 41 years at the same company. I was on call either every other week or third week. The freedom is unbelievable!!! Been taking 3 year old granddaughter to my Mom’s about every week. Mom will be turning 97 in August and still lives at home! Been shooting up a story too. Shot my first 600 yd BR match and shot steel plate shot last Tuesday at Briar Rabbit club. Think I’ll drive up to Camp Perry tomorrow or Thursday to check out commercial row.
 
I turn 69 next month, and as of 2 weeks ago I've semi retired, I've been an insurance adjuster (independent) 1099. Both knees, right hip and back are shot, if you don't believe climbing roofs for 10-20 years will take it out of you (especially 12/12 slopes) just try it! I will be working from home on a "day rate" and just today filed for Social Security!! So I should be just fine, will get a little more time to shoot and should now only be 9 years behind in my "honey do" list.
