Retirement

Paid into SS for 50 years, I now have 3 1/2 years experience at being retired drawing 2 Pensions. I retired a few months short of my 65 birthday, My wife retired at 58. One of the biggest mistakes I made was not retiring at 62. Most of my working career involved working weekends and holidays I had to schedule my fun time and match shooting around my weekends off. If you say retirement is not what’s it’s cut out to be you didn’t prepare financially or mentally or don’t have enough hobby’s.in the 1st year I was retired I had 6 job offers there has never been a day I regretted turning them down. Retirement may not be for everyone but sure looks good on me

It is funny, when I say I will be retiring next year, that is kind of funny to me. My plan is to put my shop back together and do job shop work to keep me busy along with a bunch of projects I want to do and of course shooting. But this time, I will work at my pace and on jobs I chose. So you could say I won't actually be retired, but to me, this is what I love to do.

Well to be fare, I have enjoyed most things I have done in my life. Not all, had some real S**T positions, but for the most part it has been a good life with bumps along the way. Those bumps, sometimes significant ones, help me to really appreciate the good.

Here is wishing everyone the best in their retirement with lots of bulls eyes and X's.

Retirement is a State of Mind.
I got bought out of my first job at 48. I played for 6-7 months, got sick of it.
My wife start giving me Want Adds from the local Papers.
Fast forward I Retired twice more .
I just Hit 75 in June, got a few repair jobs at St. Charles. Then I must admit some Friends got Sprits up and running.
This Past weekend Shot Match F/Open 6 Dasher at 600 yards , 200-16X ,199-12X, 198-14X .
Bottom Line Life is Good ,Retirement is Dandy .
Try not to dig a hole you can't get out of ?

Between they way Washington spends money and inflation Im not counting on social security. Now, if I could invest that 15% on my own instead of letting the gov. handle it the future would be much different.
That’s why IRA’s and 401(k)’s are so important. The sooner you figure that out the better off you will be. Any government program with the word “Social” in it should be a giant clue. The same is true concerning defined benefit retirement plans.

I have been retired now since 2009. I spent just shy of 28 years on the Houston Police Department. I absolutely L-O-V-E being retired. I look at it this way. When I was a kid, I LOVED summer vacation from school. I did all the things I enjoyed. However, once September came around>>POOF, all that fun was gone! So I look at retirement as "summer vacation" that never ends! I do all the things I love and don't have to worry about going back to "school / work"! I have been very fortunate as The Lord has taken excellent care of me! I have ZERO complaints!

You think Social Security will fail? THINK ABOUT IT.. The tax payers have paid into SS for how many years? And the government won't give you the money they've been taking from you over the years?
You think January 6 at the Capital was bad?
Baby, you ain't seen nothing yet.
The crooked politicians have been getting away with crap for so many years, mostly because "it doesn't effect me" attitude of the people. Get your hands on MY $$$ and you're dead meat. There won't be enough planes to take them all out of the country fast enough.
And the real problem? WE LET IT HAPPEN!!

Once you understand how it works you understand it is destined to eventually fail.

From Socialist Security site:

“Social Security is largely a pay-as-you-go program. This means that today’s workers pay Social Security taxes into the program and money flows back out as monthly income to beneficiaries. As a pay-as-you-go system, Social Security differs from company pensions, which are “pre-funded.” In pre-funded retirement programs, the money is accumulated in advance so that it will be available to be paid out to today’s workers when they retire. The private plans need to be funded in advance to protect employees in case the company enters bankruptcy or goes out of business.”

Pay as you go=Ponzi scheme

Today I heard that I was retiring next year. Not unless I win the lottery lol. I am going to try all little bit of a different scheduling process and have not taken in much work recently because I am trying to get caught up but retirement is not in my future for a very very long time probably ever. Just FYI
This thread title scared the snot out of me.

Glad I clicked anyway, time to go do my drinking breathing exercises

I turn 69 next month, and as of 2 weeks ago I've semi retired, I've been an insurance adjuster (independent) 1099. Both knees, right hip and back are shot, if you don't believe climbing roofs for 10-20 years will take it out of you (especially 12/12 slopes) just try it! I will be working from home on a "day rate" and just today filed for Social Security!! So I should be just fine, will get a little more time to shoot and should now only be 9 years behind in my "honey do" list.
Stop your SS filing, right now. Wait another 13 months. Age 70 is the max for SS, and you're almost there. You'll get about 8% more at age 70 than you will now. I'm not saying to put off retirement; just don't file for SS so quick, unless you need the money. An 8% increase, for the rest of your life, is not to be taken lightly.
