Remingtion 9 1/2 Magnum Rifle Primers hard?

Hi folks,

Loaded up some Remington 9 1/2 primers and I'm getting a lot of miss-fires in a rifle I usually find very reliable.

Are CCI Large Rifle Magnum primers a bit softer?

Any particular problems with CCI? I can also get Federal 215 and 215Ms (a bit more of a drive but doable).

The only issue I have had is with brass that had deeper pockets - seating the primer further forward - I guess the same would happen with shorter primers, but I have never seen any!
I had the opposite issue with RWS primers in some Norma 243 brass - really difficult to seat fully.

In my experience with Remington primers, if you're having mis-fires with them it is time to recheck your entire ignition system in that rifle AND recheck your method of primer seating completely, including seating depth of the primers. JME. WD

I know fora fact that the Remington 7 1/2 small Rifle BENCHREST Primers are harder than Federal 205’s. Quite a few shooters used to use them with really upper end loads.

I suppose it carries on to the large rifle as well.

I'm not sure that's the case. Sets off Magtech large rifle primers fine. Maybe it's the interface of my cases (Geco) and Remington 9 1/2s?

Seems to seat fine using same set up as other priming I'm doing.

Maybe the pockets are a little deeper... I might play around with a micrometer this weekend.

I've been using the Rem 7 1/2's for several years now , and started getting some light strikes in my .308 Kelby TR rifle . One of the Team members looked at my fired brass , and suggested a new FP spring . After changing the spring , the problem went away . Look to your bolt components first , as has been suggested by others . And I always "dead-fire" to a empty chamber to release the F/P , before putting the rifle in the case after shooting a string , so there is no pressure on the spring .

You are not seating the primers to the bottom of the pocket.
